Topeka offers a reasonable cost of living, professional jobs, and convenient access to nearby cities like Lawrence and Kansas City. The city has seen significant development since 1999, including the creation of the NOTO Arts District and Evergy Plaza. While major employers have left, new companies and entrepreneurs have contributed to the city's economy.

I was with a group of friends, when we were talking about our favorite places in the world, like Paris, Rome, New Orleans, and Vieques, Puerto Rico. Chris Wright said, "Why not Topeka, I like it here." In 1999, I asked that question — why Topeka?— and decided yes and moved here. I took a new job as a reporter at The Topeka Capital-Journal covering business. We had been living in Grand Island and Kearney, Nebraska.

What former business editor learned from the late Topekan Ken Daniel

April 15, 2026, 4:11 a.m. CT Topeka businessman Ken Daniel, founder of Midway Wholesale, died at the age of 80. Daniel founded Midway Wholesale in 1971, growing it into a major supplier of building and roofing materials. His company was sold to Beacon Roofing Supplies for $67.2 million in November 2021. Daniel was also a founder of the Topeka Independent Business Association and was elected to the Topeka Business Hall of Fame.
