The Brendan Sorsby gambling crisis ended suddenly and unexpectedly. Like a movie audience that files out of a theater numb from a dramatic ending, fans, reporters and pundits are now speculating on how the Sorsby story will play in the NFL. It’s easy but unwise to overlook what just happened: College athletics took a step to save itself. And for a change, some college leaders deserve praise, support — and encouragement to do more. Let’s review what transpired.

My Turn | NCAA and schools bet against themselves

Brendan Sorsby’s gambling on Indiana football games while he was on the team violated the NCAA’s cardinal rule. His thousands of other bets exceeding $90,000 also violated the NCAA’s rules. The recently transferred Texas Tech quarterback was treated for a gambling disorder. Nonetheless, the NCAA banned him from playing college sports again. Sorsby brought a lawsuit in a state court in Lubbock County, Texas, where Texas Tech is located.

My Turn | Duke-Michigan a reality TV show

Duke recently signed a controversial new TV deal with Amazon's streaming service for exclusive rights to three of its men's basketball games this season. Its game with Michigan at Madison Square Garden has drawn the Big Ten into a potential legal dispute. Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports reports: "The Big Ten, backed by its primary broadcast rights holder, Fox, has communicated with both the ACC and ESPN about the matter.
