A holy trinity of folk-punk thrilled a sold-out Orlando crowd at Will's Pub
It was a bit of a religious pilgrimage for elder punks, country outlaws and hardline folkies last weekend when the holy trinity of Chuck Ragan, Tim Barry and Cory Branan came to town. And the trio rewarded the crowd with hard-bitten weepers and crowd-pleasers aplenty.

Photos: Amigo the Devil came back to Orlando for a raucous night at the Beacham Dark-hearted folksinger Amigo the Devil enthralled a Sunday-night crowd at the Beacham with a set of raucous and passionate ballads, murder and otherwise. It was good to see the former Orlandoan back on a (big) local stage.

Things got loud and sweaty and emotional in all the best ways.
Evan Dando of the Lemonheads wooed Orlando fans with a freewheeling Valentine's Day show at the Social
Evan Dando and Willy Mason romanced Orlando with delightfully freewheeling and spontaneous sets on Valentine's Day in front of an intimate crowd of the faithful at The Social. Dando in particular reveled in the creative freedom afforded to him by an empty stage, an acoustic guitar and a single microphone.
All the grandchildren and gifting ideas we saw at Stardust Video's Grandma Party holiday market
Oh Nana, you do the strangest things! Grandma Party returned to Audubon Park on Sunday, bigger and weirder than ever. Sprawling over the Stardust Video and Coffee parking lot — shout out to the one car that was still parked there from, we guess, festivities on Saturday? — a horde of local small businesses and creatives hawked unique wares that are definitely going to make it into many Orlandoans' stockings come (fill in your chosen holiday).

Things were great when Band of Horses played Orlando’s House of Blues with Bella White Band of Horses live at the House of Blues Band of Horses with opener Bella White toured through the House of Blues in Orlando and had the audience no doubt saying, "Hey, Things Are Great indeed!" (See, it's the title of their most recent album.) The band left it all on the floor, as you can see from these sweat-soaked performance shots.
Jawbreaker and Joyce Manor whipped up a multigenerational roar at the House of Blues
Jawbreaker and Joyce Manor whipped up a multigenerational roar at the House of Blues Jawbreaker live at the House of Blues A resurgent Jawbreaker roared through the somewhat puzzling location of the House of Blues (a gig's a gig!) as part of a reunion tour on an otherwise sleepy Monday evening. The reaction was, yes, reverent for the emo legends. Touring openers Joyce Manor played hard to a fierce crowd of their own partisans.
Deantoni Parks, White Sands and Kurt Rambus wove dark (literally) atmospheric spells in Orlando
Deantoni Parks, White Sands and Kurt Rambus wove dark (literally) atmospheric spells in Orlando Deantoni Parks at long last was able to bring his Technoself experimental-percussion guise to Will's Pub on Thursday night. Adventurous support came from Steve Head's White Sands ambient project (abetted by Acoqui bandmate Aaron Borowicz) and host Kurt Rambus doing a drill & bass set. The moody and forward-thinking atmospherics kept the audience in an ecstatic haze.

Flying During These Unprecedented Times Of Coronavirus - NYCAviation
I was not a pilot in the airline industry during and immediately following the 9/11 terrorist attacks. I was in the US Air Force stationed in Arizona and will never forget the events of that historic and tragic day. Globally, passenger travel was one of the hardest hit industries, just as we are experiencing today. I had many friends in the industry then and I have heard some wild stories about what flying was like that day, as well as during the subsequent weeks, months, and even years.
Southern Fried Sunday spotlights the women of Central Florida music with Southern Belle Ball, Miami’s Deaf Poets make underachievers of all other two-piece bands | This Little Underground | Orlando Weekly
Boy, I never thought I'd be housed by anything named Irma. But like all those busted trees and power lines everywhere, so went the show calendars, and so went my material in the aftermath. So, apologies for the unannounced column break last week. But the beat goes on. Of all Southern Fried Sunday's themed events, the recent inaugural Southern Belle Ball spotlighting the ladies of Central Florida roots music was one of its most distinctive.
Afghan Whigs still hot and heavy, the artistic breakthrough of Manchester Orchestra, and more | This Little Underground | Orlando Weekly
A true cult band by definition and following, the Afghan Whigs are one of the few acts that can lay claim to their own, nearly exclusive, realm. Now, the influential '90s indie-rock group are reactivated and two albums into their creative revival. Though perhaps not prime, the new work is substantive. Just listen to the rumble and torque of "Arabian Heights" on this year's In Spades, which rocketed their set right out of the gate with force and command.
Stratolaunch: The Next Evolution of Consumer Space Travel - NYCAviation

Gulf Diplomatic Crisis Hits Qatar Aviation - NYCAviation
As part of a political conflict that has built over the past several years, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt have severed diplomatic ties with their Persian Gulf neighbor Qatar. This development will have wide-ranging impacts, including a severe disruption to aviation in the region. Air traffic rights, including landings and overflights, were quickly said to be in jeopardy following announcement of the diplomatic rift.
The restored legacy of Detroit proto-punks Death; Jamestown Revival and the Record Company rock dads | This Little Underground | Orlando Weekly
Typically, the Grammys are of little concern to me. But, man, class act, that Adele. Your mom was right about her. Over the years, there have been some nice instances of important but overlooked bands finally getting their due. But few are as righteous as Death (Feb. 13, Will's Pub), who have become perhaps one of the greatest history-righting rock stories of all time.
Super Jumbo History at Boston Logan - NYCAviation
Aviation history was made on January 26, 2017 when the first arrival of an Airbus A380 touched down at Boston Logan International Airport. I was pleased to have been invited to the arrival ceremonies held by Emirates who operated the flight. This invitation allowed me the good fortune of having a front row seat to the event in more ways than one. The event was held in the new section of Terminal E, designed specifically to accommodate the largest of the large in the airliner world.
PHOTOS: The Grand Canyon Onboard The Maverick Experience - NYCAviation
I have never been that into helicopters. It probably doesn’t help that, despite growing up around an airport, my only real experience with them was a short, underwhelming flight over a fair. But that was before I visited Maverick Helicopters. Bryan Kroten is the Vice President of Marketing for Maverick Aviation Group, the parent company of Maverick Helicopters. A Las Vegas hospitality industry veteran, he has served in various executive roles in some pretty exciting venues around the city.
JetBlue Flies Back in Time with Their New "Retrojet" - NYCAviation
So you may be asking yourself why is a 16 year old airline debuting a retrojet? Well this is JetBlue where out of the box thinking is the norm. With JetBlue restarting their seasonal Palm Springs service, the airline set out to try something new by bringing back something old. And with that their 1960’s era retrojet was born. The Jetblue design team was tasked with coming up with a scheme and branding on what Jetblue would have looked liked some 50 years ago.
Emirates Announces Fort Lauderdale as 11th US Destination - NYCAviation
In a press release issued earlier this morning, Emirates Airline announced its 11th US destination namely Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport (FLL). Scheduled daily service will commence on December 15, 2016. One of the driving factors of this new announcement is the relationship between Emirates and JetBlue Airways. Passengers arriving in South Florida will have access to destinations all over the US and much of Latin America through connecting flights on JetBlue.
The Route Launch Experience: Qatar Lands in Boston - NYCAviation
I pulled up to the Boston Park Plaza Hotel amid a chaotic scene. There were police officers, security, and protesters carrying signs and chanting. There were camera flashes from the moment I handed the car off to the valet all the way to the coat check, and dignitaries everywhere. I had arrived at the Qatar Boston Launch Gala. Okay, so maybe the whole “camera flashes” bit was a little (okay, a lot) embellished, but the rest is true.
Veterans Day: Remembering Ed - Who Made an Impact on Me
Veterans Day in the United States is a time where we as a country pause to remember those who have served in the armed forces. There are many of us in the aviation enthusiast community who got into the hobby because of their service in, or interaction with, the military. I’d like to share with you the story of a remarkable man who was an accomplished military and civilian aviator; United States Air Force Colonel Edward B. Sleeper (Ret.).
What Really Happened With Allegiant 426's "Low Fuel" Situation?
because of an ATC recording of the pilot telling Air Traffic Control that he doesn’t have enough fuel to divert to another airport. This need to divert was because the intended destination, Fargo, North Dakota, was closed while the Blue Angels practiced for an air show. Though the aircraft landed safely, many feel the aircraft was in serious danger of fuel exhaustion.

Giving Pease A Chance: An Allegiant Air Flight Review
and resident of Maine, I am painfully aware of the lack of direct route flights to many places throughout the United States. While the old New England colloquialism “You can’t get there from here” isn’t necessarily true with connecting flights, those connections certainly are daunting to many. Enter Pease International Tradeport (PSM) and low cost carrier Allegiant Air. Pease International, located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, is the former Pease Air Force Base.
Photos: JetBlue Honors Our Veterans With a Stunning New Special Livery - NYCAviation
Throughout its nearly fifteen year history, New York-based JetBlue Airways has embraced a wide variety of looks for its fleet of aircraft. At the core of this ever-changing look has been the airline’s tailfin designs. JetBlue launched in 2000 with 3 different designs: Stripes, Harlequin, and Dots. In the years since a variety of others have also been introduced. Some, such as the Building Blocks design, have been painted on just one aircraft.
JetBlue Celebrates JFK's New T5i Extension for International Arrivals - NYCAviation
Over the course of its 15 years of operation, JetBlue Airways has been constantly growing. With that growth has come an ever-changing terminal experience at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), the airline’s home base. Initially, the carrier used Terminal 6, the former National Airlines Sundrome. The classic I. M. Pei designed terminal had seen more than its share of tenants over the years. By the time JetBlue took up residency there, it was significantly dated.
The USO Welcomes Traveling Servicemembers Through New York - NYCAviation
For many years, the options for a servicemember to relax in a lounge before or after a flight through the New York City airports were extremely limited. However, on September 17, 2014, that all changed for those soldiers traveling through John F. Kennedy International Airport. That day saw the opening of the United Service Organization (USO) Center at JetBlue’s Terminal 5. This brand new USO Center is the first to be opened at a New York City-area airport.
Finding a Hidden Gem in Maine's Back Country - NYCAviation
Some of the greatest memories I have are not of planned events but of things that happened spontaneously, or as often was the case for me, accidentally. Such was the case one morning when I was running along a wooded trail in the town of Acton. I came out into a clearing that turned out to be much more than just a clearing. It was an airfield. What I had found was Old Acton Airfield (ME20).
Watching Airplanes: Crossing Generations to Foster the Aviation Dream - NYCAviation
Some people would say that I lead a bit of a boring existence. Long hours at the office and a commute that takes the better part of an hour greatly reduce the amount of free time I have in the evenings. Most nights it behooves me to wait out the evening exodus from Portland by watching the evening push at Portland International Jetport (PWM) from the observation area. The observation area is actually very nice.
The Yin & Yang of Airline Identity (Part One) - NYCAviation
(Editor’s note: this is part one of a series by Patrick Smith; this first installment focuses on logos and liveries.) There was a time, not terribly long ago, when the logo of Pan American World Airways was one of the most widely recognized commercial trademarks in the world. There was nothing remarkable about the symbol — a fissured, blue and white globe reminiscent of a basketball — but it worked.
