Big Walnut’s Eli Stumpf eyes Division II playoff run while Orange, Liberty and Berlin also advance
Click here for a postseason breakdown of all other fall sports in Delaware County. DELAWARE COUNTY — Eli Stumpf, a three-year starting quarterback for the Big Walnut football team, had a little extra time at school one afternoon. So, he pulled up some old game tape from his sophomore year. He hardly recognized himself. “I saw somebody who wasn’t as confident as I am now,” said Stumpf, who is now a senior. Stumpf went to Golden Eagles’ coach Curtis Crager to talk about what he watched.
Coming later this week: A look at Delaware County football teams’ playoff prospects. DELAWARE COUNTY — When Kathe Theisen was asked about her thoughts on the postseason, she wasted no time in her response. The coach has complete confidence in her Big Walnut girls soccer team, which opened postseason play with an 8-0 win over 14th-seeded Whetstone on Oct. 22. “We’re going to win,” said Theisen, whose team is 10-3-4 and seeded second in the Division II district tournament.
‘A sense of achievement’: How Olentangy Berlin runner Georgia Speelman found her stride
DELAWARE – Craig Speelman made a deal with his daughter in the winter of 2023: For every day that his daughter would run one mile, he would give her $1. Young Georgia would have to do it for one month to receive the complete pay out. So, Georgia did it. Then she did it for a second month. And then a third. Georgia made the deal with her father because she wanted to join the Olentangy Hyatts Middle School track and field team. Craig bet her that she couldn’t stick with it.
‘The game I love’: Lessons learned by Olentangy Liberty’s Grayson Davis through football
POWELL – Grayson Davis’ journey in football was almost stopped before it got started. He suffered a broken arm in youth football and stopped playing for a while. But he couldn’t stay away. And now, the Olentangy Liberty senior running back couldn’t imagine his life without the sport. A four-year letterwinner, Davis was a part of a state championship and is now a main player with the Patriots as they seek more postseason glory.

Abstract WHO-endorsed shortened, all-oral regimens have improved tolerability and outcomes for MDR/RR-TB treatment, but predictors of poor outcomes remain incompletely-characterized. We conducted a prospective cohort study (NCT05871489) of adults with bacteriologically-confirmed pulmonary MDR/RR-TB treated with a shortened, all-oral regimen in Lesotho.
‘Do it together’: Olentangy Liberty field hockey’s Avery Garrett helps get everyone involved
POWELL — Avery Garrett felt helpless as she watched her teammates from the sideline on Aug. 22. A standout midfielder on the Olentangy Liberty field hockey team, Garrett was dealing with an illness and couldn’t do much to help. She remembered a conversation she had with Patriots coach Marianne Flannery before the season. “(Flannery) just told me the one thing she wanted me to work on was empowering others,” said Garrett, who is a junior. “You can’t force anyone to do anything.
‘Hitting yourself with a hammer’: Olentangy Orange runner Cowen Allender fights through the pain
LEWIS CENTER – Runners at the finish line of a cross country meet vary from exhaustion to outright sick. It’s a painful experience where the reward is relief. Olentangy Orange coach Adam Walters offers a perspective when describing what the 5,000-meter endeavor feels like and how to make it through. “Running is like hitting yourself with a hammer,” explained Walters, who leads the boys cross country team in the fall as well as both boys and girls track and field programs in the spring.
Flipping the switch: How Buckeye Valley football lineman Miles Hall found his voice
DELAWARE — Miles Hall sits quietly on the bus listening to music to get himself mentally prepared for the night ahead. It’s how the Buckeye Valley senior transforms from mild-mannered and polite to a dominant force on the offensive and defensive lines for the Buckeye Valley football team. Hall sits there with headphones and visualizes what’s to come. “I just listen to music and just think in my mind that I’m going to dominate,” Hall said. “(It’s) next play, next play, next play mentality.
‘A light for me’: Abi Swisher finds family with Big Walnut girls volleyball
SUNBURY – Abi Swisher can already see what’s going to happen next when she rises at the net. A senior middle blocker for the Big Walnut girls volleyball team, Swisher has a propensity to get in the way of an opponent’s shot. She is ranked seventh in the state with 66 blocks this season. “Honestly, when I’m going up for a block, my [mindset] is I’m blocking this ball,” Swisher said. “Sometimes I don’t get up on the block. It happens to the best of the best.
Olentangy Berlin girls soccer finding new dimensions in pursuit of another OCC title
DELAWARE — Being a center back doesn’t bring many scoring opportunities in the normal flow of a soccer match. So, Ella Dusenberry does most of her damage on set pieces. A staple on Olentangy Berlin’s back line for the last two seasons, the senior has recently added another dimension to her game this year: scoring. Dusenberry has nine goals, most coming off set pieces, including three in the Bears’ season-opening win over Dublin Scioto on Aug. 14.
‘I’m going to do what I have to’: Big Walnut girls soccer rallies behind coach Kathe Theisen during cancer battle
SUNBURY – Kathe Theisen doesn’t usually have a problem bringing energy to everything she does. She’s passionate and full of enthusiasm, something that’s served her well during her tenure as coach of the Big Walnut girls soccer team. It was at a lunch last winter that Theisen broke the news to her 10 seniors that she was going to need their help a little more in the coming months. She wasn’t sure she would have as much energy because she was battling cancer.
‘It’s been a fun challenge’: Buckeye Valley girls volleyball faces same motivation, different execution
DELAWARE – Coming off a year of unprecedented success, Taylor Harning knew things would be a little different for the Buckeye Valley girls volleyball team. Moving to outside hitter from the opposite side to replace the Barons’ top point scorer last year, Harning didn’t feel like she needed to adjust too much. After all, she played the position during the club season at Elite Volleyball Training Center. “I wouldn’t say it’s an adjustment physically as much as it is leadership-wise,” the senior said.

‘A unique talent’: Delaware Hayes kicker Chase Sims emerging as special teams weapon
DELAWARE – Ryan Montgomery had no qualms about sending his kicker out for a 54-yard field goal attempt during the Delaware Hayes football team’s game at Big Walnut on Sept. 11. Chase Sims has shown the ability to kick long distances. When the senior got out there, he went through the same routine he always does: He checked the yardage between the spot of the ball and tee to make sure the snap was the correct distance. He lined up the kick, checked to see if his holder was ready.
A different perspective: How Olentangy Orange midfielder Mason Bogo made the most of his recovery
LEWIS CENTER – Tony Díaz knew what he saw when Mason Bogo went to the ground during a training session. The Olentangy Orange boys soccer coach was just a couple of months into his tenure when Bogo fell to the ground and grabbed at his knee. “We were just out on our grass practice field on a rainy day,” Díaz said. “It looked like he just took a wrong step and just kind of fell down.
‘She’s going to fight for every point’: Defending state champ Soleil Cordell still raising her game for Olentangy Berlin
DELAWARE — Ever since Soleil Cordell stepped on the tennis court for Olentangy Berlin, she’s been one of the best in the state. Last year, she solidified that by become the first athlete at Berlin to win a state championship when she won the Division I title. This year, the senior is focused on getting even better. One thing is for sure – Cordell is having a lot of fun with the process. “I think tennis is the best sport for me because I get to work on being my best self every day,” Cordell said.
‘It just came naturally to me’: Reese Laaksonen, Delaware Hayes girls soccer adjust to new coach
DELAWARE – Reese Laaksonen tried a lot of different things growing up. She danced, took ballet and even tried karate. She didn’t like some of them. Others were a comedy of errors. Nothing resonated with her the way soccer did. “When I was around 4 (years old), maybe, my parents tried (to get me into) different things,” Laaksonen said. “(I tried) different things like dance (and) ballet. I just didn’t like it. “I tried for karate for a day and I quit,” she said.
‘He fights when he runs’: Big Walnut football’s Nolan Buirley prepares for position change
SUNBURY — Nolan Buirley has never shied away from contact when he’s running with the football. The Big Walnut senior almost seeks it out. After all, the fastest way from the backfield to the end zone is straight ahead. So when Buirley was asked what drew him to the sport in the first place, his answer was not surprising. “I like to hit people,” he replied. A fitting response considering when Buirley moves on to play at Northwestern next fall, he’ll switch to linebacker.
‘I just wanted to make an impact’: Coomer, Moore highlight changing Olentangy Orange girls volleyball team
DELAWARE — Camryn Coomer has been through it all over the course of her career — position changes, injuries, successes and failures. She wouldn’t change a thing. The senior outside hitter enters her swan song for the Olentangy Orange girls volleyball team this season, a program that — like Coomer — has gone through a lot of change. The Pioneers are replacing four starters off last year’s team, which went 24-3 and made the state tournament for the second time in program history.
Delaware-Buckeye Valley, Orange-Berlin rivalries highlight Week 1 football slate
DELAWARE — It’s easy enough to get amped up for the first week of the high school football season. Throw in a fierce rival, and things are bound to get combustible. Four Delaware-area rivals are set to throw fuel to the fire Aug. 20 when Delaware Hayes travels to neighbor Buckeye Valley and district rivals Olentangy Berlin and Olentangy Orange meet at Berlin. The stakes are about as big as they can get in the early part of the season because the ramifications could be felt for weeks to come.

The Queue (short)
In the digital age, we’ve reached a level of voyeurism that at times can cross the boundaries of morality. This exists most disturbingly within the dark web, where troubling content can be found for anyone to view. The Queue, a short film written and directed by Michael Rich, examines the depths of the depravity of humans, both those who carry out atrocities, and those who desire to view it. Burt Bulos plays Cole, who has his first overnight shift as an internet content moderator.

New Jersey’s Prompt Payment Act, N.J.S.A. 2A:30A-1 and 2 (Act), gives important rights to contractors and other parties who provide services or materials to construction projects in their quest for prompt payment. The primary purpose, as expressly stated in the legislative history and reflected in the lion’s share of changes made, has been for increased protection for residential homeowners with mortgages on their primary residences. Fashion manufacturing—more specifically, shoe manufacturing—comes at a huge environmental cost. Textile production creates every year, second only to the packaging industry. The footwear and garment industries together are responsible for 8% of all greenhouse gases globally. Shoes with a lot of small and unique parts are more complex and environmentally intensive to produce because each component must be accounted for from materials (sourcing) as well as a labor assembly perspective.

Liberty hockey wins 1st state title
COLUMBUS – Charlie Hughes may have shied away from taking all the credit in leading the Olentangy Liberty hockey team to a state championship.
