FMT combined with atezolizumab-bevacizumab in hepatocellular carcinoma refractory to immunotherapy: an open label, single-arm, phase II pilot study
Abstract Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) may help to overcome resistance to immunotherapy. In this single-center, single-arm phase II hypothesis-generating pilot study (FAB-HCC), we included 12 patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) who progressed on atezolizumab plus bevacizumab. Patients received a single FMT via colonoscopy from a donor with HCC who responded to anti-PD-1 treatment or a healthy donor, combined with atezolizumab plus bevacizumab.
Characterization of liver disease regression in murine models of liver fibrosis and portal hypertension

Abstract Characterization of toxin-induced mouse models of regressive liver disease, focusing on the detecting of a suitable therapeutic window during fibrosis and portal hypertension (PH) regression. C57BL/6JRj mice were studied when exposed to thioacetamide (TAA) or carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) for 8 or 12 weeks (8w/12w) and after one/two (+R1/+R2) week(s) of TAA/CCl4-free regression. Healthy controls received NaCl or olive oil (OO).

The ethics of unlicensed therapy use in primary biliary cholangitis: a counter view - Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Corpechot and colleagues recently argued for an ‘ethical imperative’ to use off-licence bezafibrate to treat primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), despite the availability of several licensed therapies (Bezafibrate for primary biliary cholangitis: time to act on the evidence. Nat. Rev. Gastroenterol. Hepatol. 22, 805–807 (2025))1. Here, we present an alternative view.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis: what is new in the therapeutic landscape
Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a rare chronic cholestatic liver disease characterized by progressive inflammation, fibrosis, and stricturing of the intrahepatic and/or extrahepatic bile ducts. This process leads to cholestasis, hepatic dysfunction, progression to biliary cirrhosis, and an increased risk of hepatobiliary malignancies 1, 2. PSC displays a bimodal age distribution, with a first peak in adolescence and a more pronounced one in early adulthood 3, 4.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis - Nature Reviews Disease Primers
Abstract Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic biliary inflammation associated with periductular fibrosis of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts leading to strictures, bacterial cholangitis, decompensated liver disease and need for liver transplantation. This rare focal liver disease affects all races and ages, with a predominance of young males. There is an up to 88% association with inflammatory bowel disease.

Role of bile acids and their receptors in gastrointestinal and hepatic pathophysiology - Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology
Abstract Bile acids (BAs) can regulate their own metabolism and transport as well as other key aspects of metabolic homeostasis via dedicated (nuclear and G protein-coupled) receptors. Disrupted BA transport and homeostasis results in the development of cholestatic disorders and contributes to a wide range of liver diseases, including nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and hepatocellular and cholangiocellular carcinoma.

Therapeutic aspects of bile acid signalling in the gut‐liver axis
Summary Background Bile acids are important endocrine modulators of intestinal and hepatic signalling cascades orchestrating critical pathophysiological processes in various liver diseases. Increasing knowledge on bile acid signalling has stimulated the development of synthetic ligands of nuclear bile acid receptors and other bile acid analogues.

Post-mortem viral dynamics and tropism in COVID-19 patients in correlation with organ damage
Abstract The persistence of SARS-CoV-2 after death of infected individuals is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in different organs in correlation with tissue damage and post-mortem viral dynamics in COVID-19 deceased. Twenty-eight patients (17 males, 11 females; age 66–96 years; mean 82.9, median 82.5 years) diagnosed with COVID-19 were studied.

Prof Leroy and Prof Hirschfield then discussed two case studies of patients who had been treated with obeticholic acid. These highlighted key best practices related to using criteria to identify inadequate response to first-line ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) therapy, managing pruritus, and the potential to improve patient prognosis through implementation of obeticholic acid second-line therapy. Prof Nevens then presented the clinical evidence of the efficacy and safety of obeticholic acid.
Chromosomal instability in HCC: a key function for checkpoint kinase 2
The German cytologist Theodor Boveri proposed about 100?years ago that cancer is caused by an abnormal distribution of microscopic bodies called chromosomes. At that time, researchers had no idea of the cellular component for inheritance and challenged his hypothesis. Meanwhile, genomic instability is viewed as a hallmark of cancer1 and an alternative model for cancer formation was put forward that proposed acquisition of a ‘mutator’ phenotype as the initiating event.

The Importance of Serum Bile Acid Level Analysis and Treatment With Ursodeoxycholic Acid in Intrahepatic Cholestasis of Pregnancy: A Case Series From Central Europe
Background Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) is a severely pruritic form of reversible cholestasis that is associated with significant fetal risks. Because precise diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines are lacking, we performed a retrospective investigation of dermatologic and biochemical features, treatment, and neonatal outcome in patients with ICP seen from 2000 through 2005 at a university-based dermatologic hospital in central Europe.
