Why listening is a powerful tool for mental health | Michael Yates
“Listening, really listening, is hard when potential distractions are leaping into your ears every fifty-thousandth of a second,” wrote Seth Horowitz in the New York Times. We live in a noisy world. Our phones buzz, our screens compete for attention, and social media invites us to react before we have had time to think. We can be connected to hundreds of people and still feel remarkably alone.

Point being? The power of talk in preventing child abuse
In 2012, my family participated in a therapeutic camp designed to promote family cohesion and resilience. One of the activities all families took part in was creating a family crest and motto. At the time, our children - then 13 and 10 - were highly verbal, bordering on precocious. It should come as no surprise that our family motto became, with unanimous agreement, "Point Being?" We laughed then, as we still do now, at the fitting nature of our chosen phrase.

A radical voice in a dispossessed land (Yates interviews the translator of Paraguayan Sorrow)
Rafael Barrett was born in Torrelavega in northern Spain, close to the Bay of Biscay. Eldest of two sons, he grew up in a well-to-do, though not extremely wealthy, family and enjoyed the privileges that such families took for granted: travel, good education, social and cultural capital. For reasons made clear in William Costas’s Introduction to Paraguayan Sorrow, Barrett left Spain in 1902, going first to Paris, followed by Buenos Aires and then, in 1904, traveling to Paraguay.

Editor’s Note: September is Suicide Prevention Month in the United States. Have you ever read a book you can’t stop thinking about? I’ve been thinking a lot about F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby, set during New York’s Jazz Age. Nearly a century old and widely hailed as a classic of American literature, I’m embarrassed to admit I had never read it.
The Editorial Board: Western New Yorkers should consider blood donations and maintain Covid-19 awareness
Last week, two News stories reminded the public about our shared vulnerability. One detailed the continuing threat of coronavirus. The other story highlighted a desperate need for lifesaving blood donation. The common thread is health – individual and community. Let’s start with Covid-19.
Feeling lonely and disconnected? You're not alone
May is Mental Health Awareness month and several reports indicate a new epidemic of loneliness has emerged. Who would have thought in an age of unprecedented technological connectivity, people are experiencing such profound levels of loneliness and disconnection?

Ghosts in the machine? How can property companies deal with the threat of cyber security
With the proliferation of proptech, demands on ESG data collection and the increasing operationalisation of bricks and mortar, today's real estate companies are dealing with more data than they ever have before. So far so good, but what happens when there are ghosts in the machines? How many in our sector are confidently addressing the risks and devising robust strategies to cope when the worst happens?

Give yourself the gift of reminiscence this holiday season
It was Christmastime in 2006 when I presented a surprise gift to our two unsuspecting children, who were 7 and 4 years of age at the time. With eyes closed, a miniature dachshund puppy was placed next to them on the couch. Opening their eyes, they shouted in jubilation, “It’s a miracle!” Every year our annual family photograph included our abiding furry family member, Oscar. Over the years, kids grew, Oscar slowed, parents mellowed, and time passed.
