Letters to the Editor, July 6, 2024
Dear Sir, Preserving 248 Years of Democracy As a schoolboy growing up in England, I learned the rudiments of U.S. history. How the British government considered the Boston Tea Party an act of treason. How it escalated into the American Revolution that eventually overthrew the King, and how George Wahington, the first president of the republic, reputably never told a lie.
When the world is riskier than ever, E&S underwriters must deliver elevated solutions
In a world that is riskier than ever, the pressure is on us as E&S underwriters to find solutions that respond to the unprecedented disruption and dislocation seen in the property insurance markets in 2023. And while that word – unprecedented – has been overused in the past several years, in this case, it is spot on. Since I began underwriting tough property risks as a trainee 30-plus years ago, I have never seen so much change and growth as we experienced in the past year.
Preclinical Models to Support Newly Approved Therapy for ALS: The SOD1 Rat
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rare neurological disorder characterized by motor neuron degeneration in the primary motor cortex, brainstem, and spinal cord, which results in progressive muscular atrophy, weakness, and fatality1. Onset of this disease typically occurs in adulthood, and early symptoms are difficult to recognize given their similarity to other neurological disorders2.
Commercial Real Estate Could Trigger Future Bank Failures
Banks face existential challenges. That’s partly due to their business model. They take deposits, which can be withdrawn at any time. They use those deposits to make loans that are repaid over years. There’s an obvious mismatch there. If interest rates rise, depositors might want higher rates on their deposits. If the bank won’t pay them, they’ll move their money. That’s a problem because banks don’t keep all the deposits in cash. They use deposits to make loans.
Rich Man, Poor Man: A Tale of Two Athletes
By Michael Carr and Patrick Murray The numbers are overwhelming. Currently, the average Major League Baseball, National Football League and National Basketball Association players’ salaries range from $3.26 million to $8.32 million, annually. The average career is for a MLB player, 2.5 years for an NFL player and 4.5 years for an NBA player. Yet, we see two common paths that professional athletes take when spending and managing their wealth windfalls. The consequences are significantly different.
Why Business Intelligence Technology is Essential for Fleets
Business intelligence seems to be one of those buzzwords that companies throw around when talking strategy and future-proofing solutions, but many find it hard to define. Is it a system? A service? A strategic approach? In some ways, it is all the above. In brief, business intelligence is the technology and practice used to perform data analytics and reporting for companies. It offers a view of current, historical, and predictive data all consolidated onto one platform.

Coop's Bait & Tackle on Martha's Vineyard
On a quiet evening in the late 1970s, Alan Crosley asked his friend Cooper Gilkes to take him fly-fishing. Coop had just opened his one-room tackle shop in Edgartown on Martha’s Vineyard and was gaining a reputation as the go-to instructor for those who wanted to try fly-fishing in the surf. Coop spent most evenings in those early years exploring the amazing inlets, estuaries, and windswept shores of the Vineyard, often accompanied by a rotating band of students, friends, and fellow anglers.

From Silverside To Surf Candy
Photo by Eddy Stahowiak In 1972, Kenneth E. Bay published a book called Saltwater Flies: 50 Popular Patterns and Tying. The book illuminated famous flies that have since become staples of the saltwater community – like Lefty Kreh’s Deceiver. But, it also showcased many regional flies and tyers with unique perspectives and ideas. That same year, a young tyer from Seaside Park, New Jersey, got a copy of this book and began to experiment with some of the patterns illustrated in it.
A Powerful Sphere Can Boost Your Paycheck
It’s often said that it’s not what you know but who you know that makes you successful. For every real estate professional, both are important. You have exclusive resources as an agent—both proprietary tools and relationships with other professionals throughout the industry—helping you to deliver top-notch service to your clients. We’ve talked about how you can use your knowledge and experience in real estate to defend your worth to clients who question your commission.
10 Skills You Have to Calm Commission Gripes
Even if you’re armed with vast amounts of knowledge of the industry, it isn’t very valuable without experience. To use a sports analogy, imagine that Michael Jordan had all the skills necessary to be a basketball phenomenon in his early teens but never put them to use. Would he be the hoops superstar he is today? Without the experience of playing the game, the short answer is no. You are no different.

Use Your Expertise to Justify the Commission
Everyone wants to feel appreciated, and you’re no different. You want your clients to see the value you bring to the transaction, but many real estate professionals are timid about tooting their horn to prospects and clients. You don’t want to come off as self-important, but you do want to educate customers about what you do—and most importantly, why you’re worth a commission check.

6 Criteria for Finding Your Perfect Niche
Do you need to develop a niche in order to be successful in real estate, or should you just serve everyone? It’s a valid question, and it’s one often driven by fear—the fear of “boxing yourself in.” After all, each neighborhood and agent can be vastly different. But heed this warning: If you attempt to help everyone, you could help yourself right out of business.

Does Your Brand Target the Ideal Customer?
What does it take to get your brand recognized and trusted? First, it takes definition. Define what makes you different from your competitors. Second, create a personal branding tagline or slogan built around that point of differentiation. Once you do those two critical things, get to work creating all the elements on this checklist that support your brand. As you assemble these items, take special care to stay true to your unique branding approach.
6 Ways to Get Free Press for Your Business
The only thing better than being acknowledged as a leading real estate authority in your market is not having to pay advertising dollars to earn such recognition. There are plenty of free public relations opportunities to bring awareness to your business; they just require some advance planning and a little research. Here are six ways you can promote your expertise using local resources without spending an extra dime on marketing.
5 Signs Your Brand Resonates With Clients
So you think you have a strong real estate brand, but how do you know it’s working to attract your ideal customer? Here are five ways to tell if your brand is resonating with the people you want to serve in your community—and a few of them may surprise you. You feel pigeonholed as a certain type of agent. The truth is you can’t be all things to all people, and you can’t specialize in everything in real estate.
An Easier Way to Get the Reviews You Want
Collecting customer reviews can be an arduous task, but here’s why it’s worth it: They provide some measure of confidence to your prospects, and they can directly affect your search results on almost any platform that accepts reviews. The more you have, the more likely you are to appear near the top of the list. But isn’t there an easier way to get the reviews you want?
7 Sins of Personal Branding
What is a “personal brand”? Just like company or product branding, it’s built around imaging and messaging that is designed to create a feeling. Your personal brand influences how you want others to feel about you. From photos to other branding elements, and even content, there is a lot that goes into creating your unique brand. Displayed correctly and consistently across all marketing platforms, a well-defined brand can elevate agent recognition and help to establish credibility and authority.
5 Statements That Reinforce Your Brand
Ask your client: What challenges are you facing that you think would stop you from buying or selling? This gives them a chance to alert you to possible problems in the transaction ahead of time and gives you time to think about how to work around them. Do they have credit issues? Are they upside-down on their current home? Do they need to renovate in order to get the price they want when they sell?
Use Seminars to Attract More Qualified Clients
Hosting a home buyer or home seller seminar or teaching a real estate class in your community can kill two birds with one stone: It’s a great way to get in front of a room full of prospects while also branding yourself as a local real estate expert. But what are the chances that the people who show up will convert into clients? Though your goal is to fill the seats at your seminar, remember that you want to fill them with qualified prospects.
You’re Inferior to No One
For entrepreneurs, crises of confidence can come often and hard. When you’re responsible for whether your business will sink or swim, the pressure sometimes makes you question whether you know what you’re doing and if you’re on the right track. Don’t think you’re the only one who’s ever wondered if you’ve got what it takes to make it in real estate.

6 Ways to Connect Beyond Real Estate
Internet Explorer does not currently support REALTOR® Magazine search. IE users, please download Firefox, Chrome, or Edge. Take a look at the content you’re sharing on your blog and social media feeds. Is it mostly market reports, tips on how to qualify for a mortgage, or articles about why now’s the time to buy or sell? It’s not that those aren’t good things to share; they show your expertise as a real estate professional. But how relevant is it to those who are following you online?
Op-ed: Improve cybersecurity by becoming consumer activists
Michael Carr is the chief information security officer at the University of Kentucky. He lives in Monfort Heights. Computer security is a shared responsibility. Target, Home Depot, JP Morgan Chase, Staples, Michaels, eBay, and Sony should all be held responsible for not adequately safeguarding customer and employee information. But every consumer and citizen should also be responsible for their cybersecurity. One of the most important safeguards involves developing appropriate laws and regulations.
