HEALTH MINUTE (CNN) - Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the United States, causing spikes in emergency room visits and hundreds of deaths every year. Experts say early recognition of symptoms of heat-related illnesses can save lives. Dr. Mark Conroy, an emergency medicine physician at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, said the body can be vulnerable even in common summer conditions. “It doesn’t take a lot for an individual to get sick,” said Conroy.

HEALTH MINUTE (CNN) - 16 New World screwworm infections have been reported in U.S. animals as of Tuesday, while the Center for Disease Control and Prevention says there have been no locally acquired cases reported in humans. The CDC says the risk to people remains low, but the parasitic fly can infect humans in areas where the insects are active. The agency is asking people to watch for symptoms. New World screwworms feed on the flesh of warm-blooded animals and people.
