For at least 60 years following the end of the Civil War, Jefferson City's Black citizens annually celebrated emancipation. They held picnics, barbecues, parades, dances, oratorical programs, river excursions, baseball games and other activities.

CAPITAL CITY HISTORY: Missouri WWI officer a noted outdoorsman Today at 4:00 a.m. by Michelle Brooks For the Historic City of Jefferson Courtesy/Pittsburgh Press Paul Hunt, a former assistant Missouri adjutant general and World War I lieutenant colonel, was a well-known outdoorsman. In 1938, he led the Carnegie Museum's Hudson Bay Expedition. Paul "Casey" Hunt never sat back, taking the lead in several community improvement initiatives.
