Recognizing Complications in Youth With Diabetes Admitted With Diabetic Ketoacidosis Versus Hyperglycemic Hyperosmolar State

We compare in-hospital complications in youth with isolated diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) to youth with hyperosmolarity. We reviewed medical records of youth (1–20 years) admitted over two years with DKA, hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS), and hyperosmolar DKA. We evaluated outcomes, including hospital length of stay, altered mental status (AMS), and acute kidney injury (AKI). Of 369 admissions, 334 had isolated DKA, 32 had hyperosmolar DKA, and three had isolated HHS.

On the heels of the latest celebrity suicide ... It brings up angry and frustrated thoughts for me, and I'm sure for many others. This is very sad, yes - Although it's still very rare that people in general will ever ask passed - "Are you ok?" Most people just want to hear "Fine," and hope that person does not interfere with their day. There are huge lessons here - Don't discount a friend's pain, someday you may need the same love and attention.

Introduction Current guidelines for the management of puberty in trans-masculine (TM) youth (those who identify on the masculine spectrum of gender and were assigned female sex at birth) include offering patients gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa) at the beginning of puberty.1 These are recommended for the primary purpose of decreasing unwanted secondary sexual characteristics.
