Apocalypse Clown
This a movie that does exactly what it says on the tin: a small troupe of clowns travel across a post-apocalyptical Ireland. A technology blackout has plunged the world into darkness and anarchy, and three reluctant comedians are seeking to savage their own identity.
17 PGA Championship courses you can play
(UPDATED: May, 2023.) Some critics of the PGA Championship claim it lacks a true identity that distinguishes it from the U.S. Open. Over the years, the PGA has been held at many prestigious private clubs with narrow fairways, fast greens and nasty rough. But it has also been held at several courses that are accessible to you and me, unlike those of the U.S. Open (for the most part).
Offshore Wind Power on the Road to Decarbonization
Here in the Northeastern U.S., there's a strong move to wind power generation as part of an overall decarbonization strategy. The concept is that wind power can feed the grid and an ever growing number of electric vehicles. This is one of the key strategies in Massachusetts' MA 2050 Decarbonization Roadmap Study ( available at: www.mass.gov/2050Roadmap ).
Best Comedies 2020
Fresh talent stormed comedies this year, starting with top comedy of the year: The Forty-Year-Old Version, with the defiant and hilarious Radha Blank doing quadruple duty as writer, director, producer, and star in the story of a middle-aged New York playwright who reinvents herself as a rapper. Four more of the best comedies of the year (Saint Frances, Extra Ordinary, Why Don’t You Just Die!, Yes, God, Yes) also represent the feature debuts of their directors.

WOW - COVID-19 shelter at home rules have sure increased our reliance on computer networks! Utilities already depend on computer networks for business and operations. With databases full of personally identifiable information (e.g. checking account information), utilities are an attractive target for hacker thieves.

Top 7 Grid Modernization Challenges/Opportunities
Picture taken by Worcester Polytechnic Institute I was recently asked to write and article for T&D World about my views on the top 7 challenges and opportunities in Grid Modernization. With growing technical complexity and existing demographics in our industry, the #1 challenge and opportunity is people. What do you think?

Cybersecurity Expertise In Demand
Last week, I participated in the Advanced Cyber Security Center's annual conference. Here are a couple of the highlights: So, if your organization has open positions and is finding them hard to fill, what can HR and Recruitment do? It starts with recognizing the challenge and then making changes to improve your results. I think the first thing people can do to reduce cyber security risk in any organization is to become a "human firewall" themselves.
Growth in Interdiscipline STEM Education
I participated in the Career Fair at my University a couple of days ago. Once again, our students are in great demand with many companies arranging next day interviews and lucrative job offers for people just entering their senior year. This year; however, I noticed the inter-discliplinary nature of some of the fastest growing and highest demand areas.
Does Your Organization Have Sufficient Cybersecurity Expertise?
Over the last few years, I've been asked about cybersecurity education and training by over a dozen power industry organizations and a few (very large) financial services ones. That's not really surprising since WPI has been teaching graduate power systems engineering for over 100 years and cryptography for well over over 20. This week; however, I was surprised to learn about the new "Industroyer" malware unleashed on Kiev, Ukraine last December.
Does the Electric Power Industry have an unfilled educational need to help working professionals develop their technical expertise in High Voltage, Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission? | Energy Central
Question Mike Ahern Director, Worcester Polytechnic Institute Does the Electric Power Industry have an unfilled educational need to help working professionals develop their technical expertise in High Voltage, Direct Current (HVDC) Transmission? Answers
Should Tech Industry Professionals Focus on Avoiding Automation?
I saw an interesting article entitled: "Tech industry is ‘eating itself’ through automation and lack of skills," ( http://www.computerweekly.com/news/450402722/Tech-industry-is-eating-itself-through-automation-and-lack-of-skills-says-Harvey-Nash-survey ). The concern is clear - a large fraction of today's IT professionals feel that much of their current job could become automated over the upcoming decade.
Poll | What 5 things keep you up at night? Nightmares recruiting in the power industry.
Natasha Tresham Director, Human Resources, Tantalus Systems 1. Finding candidates with the right breadth of skills/aptitude. (i.e. There are lots of software developers out there, but not many who understand the impact when a device is inaccessible in the field 6 mths of the year.) 2. Reducing the ramp up time of new hires. We have a steep learning curve, and how do we make it more manageable for new employees of the industry. 3.
Poland intangibles guide
Poland intangibles guide June 14, 2011 By Mike Ahern, Piotr Wiewiorka, and Przemyslaw Orwat, of PwC Poland Poland joined the OECD in 1996 and generally follows the OECD Guidelines. Transfer pricing regulations, including the Corporate Income Tax (CIT) Law and the Personal Income Tax (PIT) Law, draw heavily on the OECD Guidelines. On May 1 2004, Poland joined the European Union. Poland, therefore, accepts the EU Transfer Pricing Code of Conduct. Sorry. You must be a subscriber to view this article.
Complexity Rules in the 21st Century
Fifteen years ago, when I worked at Northeast Utilities (now Eversource), a test department colleague made an observation: “These relays are getting smarter, but we aren’t!” Seeing the gap between our skills and what the increasingly intelligent technology required of us, we went to work. We standardized on one relay platform, which simplified training and procurement.
What specialty areas should WPI consider as we continue to develop our graduate Power Systems Engineering curriculum?
William Fortune President, Industrial Consultants Inc./ W. Fortune & Co Study how to apply the new technology being developed by Transatomic Power, Cambridge, MA. We need to locate the first few units on Federal Bases, like Hanscom Air Force Base to replace the 4 oil/gas fired acient boilers that provide steam to the base, called District Heating.
