Bill 5 is a threat to farmers and Ontario’s food sovereignty
If you blinked, you might have missed it. But a few weeks ago, Doug Ford recklessly rammed a highly controversial bill through the legislature at an alarming speed. Despite dissenting voices from people across the province, Bill 5 was passed with limited debate, sidelining serious issues, including the bill’s attack on Indigenous rights, environmental protections, labour laws and democratic oversight.

Doug Ford wants to create rules-free zones in Ontario. We shouldn’t let him
Since U.S. President Donald Trump began threatening Canada with tariffs, I’ve heard from many people and businesses about the intense anxiety they’re feeling. Ontarians are already struggling in the face of an ongoing affordability crisis and are now facing potential layoffs and staring down the face of an impending recession. But instead of uniting people to push back against Trump, Premier Doug Ford is taking advantage of this anxiety.
Doug Ford’s home renovations savings program will not help those who need it the most
When Doug Ford’s government announced earlier this month that they are launching a retrofit program, I was relieved. After six long years of taking a hard line against common sense affordability measures like home retrofits, it appeared his government finally reversed course and listened to what the Ontario Greens have always insisted for years: we can help homeowners, renters and small businesses save money by saving energy.
Doug Ford’s bike lane plan is taking us backwards
Given the state of healthcare, housing and various other crumbling systems in Ontario, I didn’t have “ban bike lanes” on my bingo card of Premier Doug Ford’s priorities. But increasingly, it feels as if everything I care about in this province is under attack by the Ford government — from climate action to childcare to housing to, now, cycling.
Save our public transit systems before they go down
Public transit is at the nexus of solving Canada’s most pressing challenges. It is a solution to the rising cost of living. It helps reduce carbon emissions. It is the most powerful method of tackling traffic congestion. It is the lifeblood of economic growth in our towns and cities. It enables building the kind of dense, sustainable and cost-efficient housing supply we need to tackle the housing crisis. However, we have a big problem.
Parliament stalls out as Conservatives accuse Liberals of corruption
The government has been unable to put any of its own business before the House of Commons for a full week, and the Conservatives on Thursday said that's the result of Liberal "corruption." Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer said the governing party would rather see the House bogged down in debate than produce documents related to misspent government dollars in a program his party has dubbed the "green slush fund." House Speaker Greg Fergus ruled last Thursday that the government "clearly...
Trudeau set to talk about artificial intelligence on day one of Francophonie summit
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to take part in an armchair discussion on artificial intelligence in France today as the Francophonie summit kicks off. Trudeau is scheduled to talk about AI in the morning, while leaders will hold a session on challenges for French-speaking citizens in the digital age in the afternoon.
Investigators now probe cause of gas well fire north of Calgary
An energy company that runs a natural gas well north of Calgary says a roughly 24-hour fire that injured five workers has finally been snuffed out. There was a "well control incident" Monday afternoon at the site about eight kilometres north of Cochrane, Alta., but by early Tuesday afternoon, "the fire was extinguished, and the well was brought under control," according to the updated news release from HWN Energy Ltd.
Blast at Alberta energy site seriously injures five employees
An explosion at an energy site northwest of Calgary has injured five workers, and RCMP say the resulting fire could burn for days. Cpl. Gina Slaney said the five were part of a crew that was drilling on a lease site at a field north of Cochrane, Alta., on Monday afternoon when it's believed they hit a gas pocket, triggering a large explosion. Slaney said three of the workers were seriously injured and two were very seriously injured, and they've all been transported to hospitals in Calgary.
A potent force against fossil fuels
The global campaign against fossil fuels got a major boost in New York this week with the appointment of Kumi Naidoo as president of the Fossil Fuel Treaty Initiative. A remarkable force in global campaigns for human rights and environmental sanity, Naidoo announced his new role during “Climate Week” in the Big Apple. Timed to coincide with the United Nations’ annual General Assembly, the week began with a modest win.
Ontario can end gridlock. But not with more highways
If you’ve driven along a 400-series Ontario highway recently, you’ve probably seen one of the massive Highway 413 billboards installed by the Ford government late last year to promote the massive spending on highway projects that have become one of its signature priorities.
Doug Ford’s renewables U-turn has a lot further to go
When Doug Ford's Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario was elected in 2018, one of his first moves as premier was to tear up hundreds of renewable energy contracts.
It's time to legalize housing
By Mike Schreiner As the housing crisis continues to spiral out of control, life is becoming harder and more expensive for far too many people. Parents working full-time jobs can barely make rent, let alone think about saving for a down payment. Mike Schreiner is the leader of the Green Party of Ontario and MPP for Guelph.

Opinion | Ontario's Choice: Livable future or slippery slope to climate catastrophe?
On Earth Day we are at a climate crossroads, writes Ontario Green Party Leader and Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner Set Guelph as My Local news By Mike Schreiner Wed., April 19, 2023timer2 min. read The choice in front of us is a massive one. Do we choose a livable future, or a slippery slope to climate catastrophe?
Ontario Green party leader on how we can transition to a green economy
Luckily, we don't have to choose between a healthy environment and economic prosperity, writes Guelph MPP Mike Schreiner.
Opinion | Ontario Green party leader on how we can transition to a green economy - it all begins with the work we do
Ontario is at a crossroads. We must reach net-zero emissions by 2045 if we hope to avoid the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Decisions we make today will chart the course of the world we’re leaving behind for generations to come. Luckily, we don’t have to choose between a healthy environment and economic prosperity. We can build a province in which a strong, sustainable economy is supported by local businesses leading the transition to net-zero emissions.

Ontario Greens urge Liberals to join them
A group of Ontario Greens have put together a counteroffer for Liberals trying to poach their leader.
Opinion | There’s no excuse for sprawling onto the Greenbelt Original
Doug Ford is clearly starting to run out of excuses to justify his government’s expensive pro-sprawl agenda. As the housing crisis worsens, and more and more Ontarians struggle to find an affordable place to call home, the Ontario premier has now found a new scapegoat: blaming newcomers and increased immigration targets for his broken Greenbelt promise that will lead to the destruction of farmland and nature.
Opinion | Mike Schreiner: Paving over paradise a losing proposal for Doug Ford
As Premier Doug Ford meets with his newly formed caucus, I ask him to sincerely consider the serious financial, health and climate implications of paving over paradise — the places we love, the places that feed us and protect us. It is a now or never moment to tackle the climate emergency. The storms, floods and extreme heat we experienced just during the short election period alone is a stark reminder of what is at stake.

'Thank you, Guelph': Mike Schreiner looks ahead, and back

Thank you for putting your trust in me. It's been an honour to serve as your MPP and work with all the great people, families, businesses and organizations that call this amazing city home. Over the past four years, we’ve accomplished a lot by working together.
Spotlight: Let’s solve the housing and climate crisis by making life affordable
On April 4, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came out with its most recent climate report. And once again, its message was abundantly clear: Unless huge cuts are made to climate pollution soon, we’re walking straight into a climate catastrophe with unprecedented consequences. At the same time, housing prices in Guelph and other regions across Ontario continue to soar.
Opinion | Mike Schreiner: It’s time to get serious about decriminalizing drugs in Ontario
We need to start treating mental health and addiction as a public health issue. Not a criminal one. By Mike SchreinerContributor Fri., March 25, 2022timer3 min. read Two hundred and thirty. That’s how many opioid-related deaths Public Health Ontario estimates occurred each month last year. The number of overall drug poisoning fatalities is likely even higher. We need to start treating mental health and addiction as a public health issue. Not a criminal one.
Opinion | Schreiner: Environmental protections are not red tape Original
When Premier Doug Ford says we need to cut red tape, what he’s really saying is that he wants to dismantle environmental protections. By Mike SchreinerContributor Wed., Feb. 2, 2022timer3 min. read It’s getting harder and harder for Ontarians to find an affordable place to call home. The solution? Build livable, affordable communities with gentle density and smart growth that doesn’t pave over the farmland that feeds us and the environment that protects us.

Going local is the road to a healthy food system
By Mike Schreiner Sun., July 15, 2012timer3 min. read I love the taste of farm fresh local food. There’s nothing like Ontario asparagus to usher in spring, succulent strawberries to begin summer, and juicy sweet corn to close out the dog days of summer. Critics call it romanticizing food; I call it delicious. I have no dilemma using my money to support Ontario’s economy by buying local food. And scientific research confirms that fresh picked produce contains more nutrients.
Adapting Between M12 and Deutsch DT Connectors in Heavy Equipment Applications
Heavy equipment manufacturers continue to adapt state-of-the-art sensor, actuator, and motor technologies into their products to take advantage of an ever-increasing networked, precise, and analytical world. In so doing, they face a real challenge in reconciling connector types between the varying type conventions of industrial automation and their very own industries, i.e., M12 and DT.
SCHREINER: When the basement floods, give the premier a call
Author of the article: Mike Schreiner Publishing date: Nov 17, 2020 • • 2 minute read Melting snow and rain cause flooding at Woodbine Beach in Toronto on February 24, 2019. Photo by Veronica Henri /Toronto Sun Article content The premier says he’s around 24/7 to take your call. I hope people remember this when their basement is underwater due to his baffling attack on flood prevention.
Opinion | One step forward, more steps backward for water protection
Protecting water has always been close to my heart. It’s something my parents taught me growing up on a farm with a creek where I spent hours fishing and swimming. And it’s something I became even more passionate about as a Guelph resident cherishing our two rivers. Our water supply is not something we should jeopardize for a quick buck. In 2017, 1.4 trillion litres of water were extracted every day in Ontario for a variety of uses.
SCHREINER: Let’s protect migrant workers, not put them at risk
Migrant farm workers play a vital role in putting food on our tables. My jaw dropped when the Ford government announced that migrant workers who test positive for COVID-19 can continue to work if they are asymptomatic. This decision comes at a time when farms in southern Ontario are the biggest source of new infections, and as society grapples with how systemic racism continues to infect our institutions. Migrant farm workers make up close to 42% of Ontario’s agricultural workforce.

Adapting harm reduction during a pandemic
By Mike Schreiner, Doris Grinspun, Raechelle Devereaux and Adrianna Tetley Fri., May 29, 2020timer2 min. read Earlier this month, we met online for Nurses Week to talk about Ontario’s overdose crisis, which is worsening under the weight of COVID-19. Overdose deaths are on the rise, with Toronto reporting 25 deaths in April, the highest number in over a year, and the pandemic has deepened existing inequities.
Opinion | 'Cancer, heart disease, and other illnesses will not wait for COVID-19 to subside before claiming lives': Guelph MPP
(This letter was sent to Ontario Health Minister Christine Elliott, dated May 4): Dear Minister Elliott, Thank you for your continued leadership of Ontario’s health system through the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of my constituents who are suffering from non-COVID related health conditions have reached out asking when their vital surgeries and procedures will be rescheduled.
Let’s flatten the curve on climate change
Journalism has never been more important. Times are very tough for everyone now. But if you feel you can, please donate to National Observer's independent reporting fund. I normally celebrate Earth Day by planting trees, picking up litter and taking part in a big public action. Not this year, as most of us shelter indoors. But perhaps a somber, personal reflection is exactly what we need for the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
SCHREINER: We cannot leave renters and small businesses in the lurch
Many are giving Ontario Premier Doug Ford praise for the calm and forceful way he is responding to COVID-19. But one area he’s falling short is relief for renters and small businesses. We cannot talk about staying at home without discussing the home itself. Before this pandemic hit, people were struggling under Ontario’s housing crunch. A minimum wage earner in Toronto had to work 79 hours per week to afford the average one-bedroom apartment.

Basic income is the answer to a COVID-stricken economy
By Mike Schreiner Jo-Ann RobertsContributors Wed., March 25, 2020timer3 min. read People are worried about their health, their loved ones, and their future. They’re worried about paying the bills next week. Experts are telling governments to get money into people’s pockets immediately to blunt the economic hardship from the COVID-19 crisis. What we need in these unprecedented times is a dose of economic solidarity that will ensure no one falls through the cracks.
Letter: Many hands played a part in success of Jingle Bells
To the editor: On behalf of the Jingle Bells Foundation, we want to thank everyone who helped make the 71st annual Jingle Bells Telethon a huge success! A special thank you to Selective TV Alexandria, Gardonville Cooperative and H. Boyd Nelson, Inc. More than $85,000 was raised by the end of the telethon on Saturday. Opinion | Climate solutions exist, but Doug Ford is sabotaging them
Dismantle. Deny. Delay. It's been a messy couple of years of climate (in)action under Premier Doug Ford's watch. The last two weeks have felt like rock bottom — starting with Energy Minister Greg Rickford's admission that he gets policy advice from climate denial websites and bookended with the auditor general's stinging rebuke of Ford's climate plan. High on drama and abysmally low on performance is one way to summarize this government's climate record.
