The good thing about sport is that you don’t know how it’s going to end. In a decider, it’s that bit that matters, and for New South Wales, it was the rarest of things: a happy ending at Lang Park, winning 30-12 to take the Origin Shield back south. NSW won the first State of Origin, but nobody was fooled. The Blues were bad for an hour, then lucky as a result of Kalyn Ponga’s sending off, which fundamentally turned the game in their favour. Even with an extra man for a quarter of the match, they still nearly lost. The result saved coach Laurie Daley, who at that point was tracking to be the first Blues boss sacked mid-series, such was the lack of direction on display.
