1 Introduction The intestinal microbiota has far-reaching local and systemic effects on physiology, metabolism and immunity. While some of these effects can be attributed to a specific bacterial species (e.g. induction of IL-17 producing T cells by segmented filamentous bacteria (SFB)), others arise from the collective activities of several bacterial species (e.g. induction of regulatory T cells by microbial metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids) (1, 2).
