Overcoming structural barriers to the green transition
The impact of climate change is becoming increasingly evident in Europe, underlining the imperative to reach net zero carbon emissions. Global temperatures are continuing to rise, with 2024 being the first year in which global temperatures exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels (World Meteorological Organization, 2025).
Has the heatwave been driving you nuts?
Skip to: Skip to navigation Skip to content Skip to footer July 2025 began with yet another heatwave across Europe. ECB research finds such events can substantially reduce economic activity in affected regions and increase food prices. With global warming, future heatwaves are likely to have more pronounced economic effects. With a hot and sticky start to July in Frankfurt, sleep has been difficult. My daughter has been a bit grumpy. As have I.
clash of the transitions?
AI adoption requires enormous amounts of electricity. And so does greening the economy. Are the digital and green transitions clashing or can they be successfully achieved together? The ECB Blog takes a closer look. Two of the biggest economic challenges Europe faces are the digital and the green transitions. The former seeks to harness the productive possibilities of new technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI). The latter aims to transition away from carbon usage and green the economy.

The economic impact of floods
Published as part of the ECB Economic Bulletin, Issue 1/2025. Extreme weather events like the devastating flash floods that hit Spain last October have substantial human, social and economic impacts. Evaluating the energy poverty in the EU countries
Energy poverty has recently attracted increasing attention from researchers and policymakers and is now acknowledged as a significant global challenge. This importance is highlighted by its inclusion as the seventh goal of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aims to ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy services.
Accounting for nature in euro area economic activity
Nature contributes a range of critical services to economic production, many of which are insufficiently accounted for in standard economic statistics. Generally referred to as “ecosystem services”, these inputs include crucial functions such as pollination, air and water filtration, carbon sequestration, and the provision of crops, timber and other resources. The value of these services is rarely directly measured in statistics like GDP.
Economic and financial impacts of nature degradation and biodiversity loss
1 Introduction Nature is crucial to human wellbeing and provides essential ecosystem services that support economic activity. Nature encompasses all living and non-living elements on our planet, forming ecosystems such as forests, lakes and wetlands.[1] These ecosystems provide habitats for numerous species and tangible goods like food, freshwater, timber and medicinal resources.

What a hotter climate means for monetary policy (The price of inaction)
18 December 2023 By Friderike Kuik, Wolfgang Modery, Christiane Nickel and Miles Parker This is the sixth post in our series accompanying COP28. The ECB’s primary mandate is to maintain price stability. So why do we talk about climate change? In this post on The ECB Blog, we show how a hotter climate affects prices and the economy and discuss how this impacts the task of central banks.

How climate change affects potential output
1 Introduction Climate change and the actions taken to tackle it will profoundly change economic activity in the coming decades. Eliminating carbon emissions requires changes to how people consume and how businesses produce. Without sufficient progress in reducing emissions, average temperatures will increase, sea levels will rise, and climate extremes will become more frequent and more powerful.
How CT Data Analysis is Helping TE Connectivity Attain End-to-End Quality Inspection
The all-digital movement is winning over manufacturers seeking more automation, connectivity and reliability from their models and machines. Surveys from the Manufacturing Leadership Council and others show strong investments and results from Manufacturing 4.0 and related digital design and manufacturing initiatives. With a robust digital framework in place comes greater speed, depth, and agility in how product data is created and managed.
Climate change: how will it impact medium-term inflation?
Despite the increasing interest in climate change in the central bank community, we still know relatively little about the impact on medium-term inflationary pressure. Experts have explored new evidence for a panel of advanced and emerging economies on the impact of very high temperatures on prices. Extreme temperatures have noticeable effects on price developments even in the medium term, although more so in emerging than in advanced economies.
What we know about climate change and inflation
Donata Faccia, Miles Parker, Livio Stracca 12 November 2021 Despite the increasing interest in climate change in the central bank community, we still know relatively little about the impact on medium-term inflationary pressure. This column discusses new evidence for a panel of advanced and emerging economies on the impact of very high temperatures on prices.
DFM is a Path to Radical Profit Gains, not Just “Manufacturability”
The acronym DFM, for design for manufacture, has meant more than a few things during the post- WWII industrial era. It has always been associated with Producibility Guidelines, which are concerned with proper draft angles and ways to generally make manufacturing easier and faster. DFM also blends with Lean strategies and an array of best practices for casting, molding, machining and more. However, contemporary DFM is also a powerful purchasing and business tool.
