IMMCG Researchers Study Role of Specific Immune Cells in Atherosclerosis

Researchers from the Immunology Center of Georgia, part of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, recently published a review in a recent issue of Nature Reviews Cardiology that clarifies how a specific type of immune cells known as CD8+ T cells contributes to the development and progression of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is characterized by the slow buildup of plaque inside arterial walls, which thickens and narrows the arteries and restricts blood flow.

Hedrick Named to Boards of Immunology Conference, Georgia Research Alliance

Catherine “Lynn” Hedrick, PhD, co-director of the Immunology Center of Georgia at Augusta University and a Georgia Research Alliance Bradley Turner Eminent Scholar in Vascular and Cancer Immunology, was recently named to both the Board of Directors of the Southeastern Immunology Symposium and the Board of Trustees for the Georgia Research Alliance. Hedrick’s research is focused on two types of immune cells: monocytes and neutrophils.

Public Health PhD Candidate Earns Research Award At National Conference

For students beginning their research careers, finding a strong mentor is key. Joining a mentor’s research team lets students share their work with a wider audience and helps them learn from others while exploring new options they may not have thought of before. Albert Okrah, a third-year student in the Applied Health Sciences PhD program within the School of Public Health, will take his research to Greenville, South Carolina, in February, supported by an award he received in the fall.
