It’s not what Gabrielle Griffie said, but how she said it, the city of Wichita argued before the Kansas Supreme Court on Sept. 12. More specifically, how many people she said it with, and their reasons for saying it. Griffie was convicted of a misdemeanor — unlawful assembly — after leading a protest against police brutality through the streets of Wichita in July 2020. The city contends it could charge her with unlawful assembly for organizing a group to engage in disorderly conduct.

Elections cost money. For ballots, voting machines, poll workers, tabulation equipment. Then there’s the money for polling places in churches or recreation centers or schools. Between 2018 and 2022, the 105 county clerks and election commissioners across Kansas spent a combined $4.4 million — or 25% — more on elections than four years earlier. Yet Kansas voter turnout dropped five percentage points between those two nonpresidential election years.

Fentanyl test strips will finally be legal in Kansas. Here’s why that matters.

Kansans will soon be able to use fentanyl test strips without fear of being prosecuted after Gov. Laura Kelly signed Senate Bill 174 earlier this month, a measure that addiction experts hope will prevent deaths from accidental fentanyl poisoning.
