The Cavaliers standout was selected with the 53rd overall pick in the second round of Wednesday night’s 2026 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. He is later expected to be traded from the New York Knicks to the Detroit Pistons. The 7-foot center averaged 6.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game during his lone season at Virginia.

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (WFXR) – Virginia Tech forward Tobi Lawal is headed to the NBA. The former Hokie was selected by the Dallas Mavericks with the 48th overall pick, the 18th selection of the second round, during Wednesday night’s 2026 NBA Draft. The 6-foot-8 native of London, England, spent the past two seasons at Virginia Tech and is the first Hokie to be drafted since 2019. Lawal averaged 12.3 points and 8.5 rebounds per game during his senior season while shooting 54 percent from the field.
