I have been a journalist since 2009 and currently serve as the Head of the Crime Desk at The Daily Star. My reporting focuses on security, human rights, human trafficking, terrorism, and cross-border crime. I began my journalism career as a university correspondent for The Independent before joining the Dhaka Tribune as a Staff Correspondent.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No, I’ve never used a typewriter. By the time I entered journalism, newsrooms had already transitioned to digital systems. However, I’ve always admired the generation of reporters who built stories line by line on typewriters — it represents a discipline and focus we still try to uphold today.

How is social media changing news?

Social media has transformed how news is gathered, distributed, and consumed. It allows journalists to reach audiences instantly and gives citizens a platform to share information in real time. But it has also blurred the line between verified facts and misinformation. For journalists, the challenge now is not just to be first — but to be accurate, responsible, and transparent in a space where rumours can spread faster than truth.

Media Award for Labour Rights Reporting

2025 - Print Media

Mohammad Jamil Khan, head of the crime desk at The Daily Star, won the best reporting award in print media category in a competition held by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments (DIFE) for his report on labour rights. Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus presented the award at an event held at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Exhibition Centre, marking the historic May Day and National Occupational Health and Safety Day 2025.

2019 - Investigative Report on Corruption

The Daily Star's senior reporter Mohammad Jamil Khan received "Dudok Media Award-2019" for his outstanding report on graft. Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique handed over the awards to the winners, each receiving a crest and prize money.

CRAB Best Reporting Award 2020

2020 - Best Investigative Report on Narcotics

Two journalists of The Daily Star got the Best Reporting Award 2020 announced by the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB). They were awarded in different categories. Mohammad Jamil Khan for best investigative report (print/online) on narcotics, and Rafiul Islam for best report (print/online) on human rights. Eight journalists got the award in as many categories. Every awardee will be given Tk 30,000.

2022 - Best Investigative Report on "anti-militancy and extremism-awareness" and "cybercrime-awareness"

The Daily Star's senior reporter Mohammad Jamil Khan has won two "CRAB Media Award 2022" for his work on graft. Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB) gives out the awards. He won in the categories of "anti-militancy and extremism-awareness" and "cybercrime-awareness".

DRU Best Reporting Award-2022

2022 - Series of reports titled "Evaluation of cyber-crime"

The Daily Star journalist Mohammad Jamil Khan has won the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) Best Reporting Award-2022. DRU announced this through a press release yesterday. A total of 11 journalists won the award under 10 categories covering print, online, and electronic media. Jamil Khan, a senior reporter of The Daily Star, won the award in the print category for a series of reports titled "Evaluation of cyber-crime", published from June 14 to June 18, 2022.
