Hobart City Council resurrects plan to block whole homes from being turned into short-stay accommodation

The once-quashed plan to block Hobart property owners from converting their entire home into a short-stay accommodation has been resurrected by the local council. At its planning committee meeting on Wednesday, the Hobart City Council (HCC) tabled a fresh proposal to restrict the creation of short-stay accommodation in the city. The tweak to planning rules would block about 20,000 homes from being wholly converted into visitor accommodation, such as Airbnb or Stayz.

One of the teenagers involved in a group escape from Tasmania's youth detention centre has been sentenced for his involvement in an armed robbery committed while on the run. Seven detainees broke out of the Ashley Youth Detention Centre in December last year, in an incident that involved one staff member being stabbed and two others being injured. Seven detainees escaped from the Ashley Youth Detention Centre in Deloraine in December.
