Is Christian Nationalism just undiluted Christianity?
Ward was born in Derby in the Midlands. His father, a carpenter, died while his son was still young. His mother attended a local Wesleyan Methodist chapel. Despite a limited education, the young Ward became an apprentice to a printer and developed sufficient skills to become editor of The Derby Mercury. He was clearly an intelligent man, and became interested in events in Europe, in particular France during the revolutionary years (1789–1797). Ward was born in Derby in the Midlands.

Tidying up protection’s loose ends
In the decade from 2013, pensions and investments have been taking the lion’s share of the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) attention, not least dealing with the fallout of the 2014 Budget in which former chancellor George Osborne announced: “nobody will have to buy an annuity”. Mortgages, too, have come under the regulatory microscope. But in the past year, the FCA has sharpened its focus on protection.

It’s a hard knock life
Simoney Kyriakou reports on how a hardening insurance market could put your corporate clients at risk. British companies have been facing ever-rising costs during the past two years. Inflation goes high, we go low
Despite the Bank of England’s efforts to bring the inflation rate down, headline Consumer Price Index (CPI) remained at 10.1% at the time of writing and is unlikely to drop to anywhere near the 2% target in 2023. Interest rate hikes have been downplayed but this blunt mechanism for controlling inflation remains within reach of the monetary policy committee, like a fairground hammer hovering over a pop-up groundhog game.

Preparing for future risks
About 17 years ago, I was tasked with writing about insuring wild animals that are transported across the world from one zoo to another. At the time, I thought this was as exotic as insurance could get. Now, with the advancements in quantum technology, artificial intelligence (AI), smarter automatic underwriting and even smarter teams of data analysts and underwriters at global insurance companies, it seems anything could potentially be insured.
Making the Quantum leap
Insurance companies are investing heavily in quantum technology but what does this mean for the end consumer? Simoney Kyriakou reports The world of artificial intelligence (AI) and Big Data has moved on at breathtaking speed in the past few years. Insurers – often criticised in the past for being slow to take up new technologies – have been at the forefront of recent developments in the world of quantum computing.
Captive market?
Insurers are finding new ways to keep up with their clients’ ever-changing demands, says Simoney Kyriakou Insurance disruptors in the past few decades have driven changes in the market around them. For example, Vitality’s focus on wellness and wellbeing, with incentives to join gyms or eat healthily, were originally seen as gimmicky but every insurer now offers wellbeing and wellness support, and value-added services.
Engaging with vulnerable clients
Simoney Kyriakou explores how the financial planning profession can identify and engage with the growing numbers of clients in vulnerable circumstances Vulnerability is a significant issue. In February 2021, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) estimated the number of vulnerable adults in the UK was now at 27.7 million. This is more than one-third of the entire population of the UK (67.1m).
Driving change in diversity
The regulator is cracking down on poor diversity and inclusion practice in the profession, so what more should firms be doing? Simoney Kyriakou reports In September, the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) closed the three-month consultation on its discussion paper ‘DP21/2: Diversity and inclusion in the financial sector – working together to drive change’. According to the 57-page document, there is still a long way for the profession to go to improve diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI).
Dividend deviation
Simoney Kyriakou examines how insurers are reconsidering traditional investment models in this brave new world The way in which we all invest is changing. Whether driven by moral or regulatory obligations, the shift towards a more sustainable future is reflected in climate pledges by companies the world over.

Regulation - Fair warning
New FCA rules on fair value came into effect in October, but were firms ready? Simoney Kyriakou investigate The insurance profession has been scrambling to meet the UK Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) enhanced product governance rules. While the rules on pricing, auto-renewal and reporting will come into effect on 1 January 2022, the FCA expected all firms to have complied with the so-called ‘fair value’ rules that came into effect on 1 October.
Passing the PII baton
Will the FCA pass the thorny issue of PII over to the Competition and Markets Authority – and would it make a difference? Simoney Kyriakou investigates Whenever the contentious issue of professional indemnity insurance (PII) is raised, financial services stalwarts start debating ways to improve the market. It has become increasingly difficult for advisers to secure PII for a decent premium.
Walking through the pricing rules
The regulator’s insurance pricing rules are coming into force. Simoney Kyriakou asks: what does this mean for brokers and insurers? The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) final rules for insurance pricing practices come into force this year. The aim, according to the City watchdog, is to “improve charges and transparency for all consumers”.
