Clean fuels are—and will remain—more expensive to produce than fossil fuels, on average. However, when wider societal values and market-specific conditions—such as energy security, economic opportunity, and environmental benefits—are incorporated into their production costs, they can become competitive at a system level. These fuels are key to achieving a more secure, equitable, and sustainable energy system (see Figure 1).
