Interview
What was your first job as a journalist?
Radio newscaster, 1,000 watt daytime station in Minneapolis. I now have lights with that much power.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes! An IBM Selectric (prior to Selectric II, even). And even a manual typewriter. But I loved the type balls.
How is social media changing news?
Immediacy. No curating. Blather. Outrageousness. Openness. Discussion. (Wait. No discussion. We are too polarized for that.)
What does it mean to be a journalist?
Affecting social justice, enhancing the public sphere. Weeping in misery.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Evernote. MS Office. Paper and pen. Sometimes...a phone.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
Prince. Tom Cruise. President Obama. God. In that order.
Why did you become a journalist?
Watergate.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Editor. In Wayzata. Where??? Wayzata, Minnesota. It's on the shores of Lake Minnetonka ... perhaps the most beautiful place I've seen.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
FILMMAKERS, IT'S 2013. DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR JOBS ACT IS?
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Damn. None at all. Perhaps, "Try for integrity"? (I just don't want to hear, "What is 'integrity'?")
