Nancy Fest 2024 scene report: Brisket and Bushmiller
As far as I know, The Billy Ireland Cartoon Museum hasn't pulled off something as ambitious as Nancy Fest before. There's always something cool going on around the galleries on the Ohio State campus, but outside of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus, I couldn't recall a multi-day event. I'm privileged enough to say I live less than fifteen minutes away and I'd heard about this event for some time, as the library staff had been developing it over the last year.

Cartoon Dialectics 1 & 2: A Museum of Tom Kaczynski
Behind their classically laid-out, commercially styled covers (complete with old-school colophons to tickle the collector’s fancy), the first two issues of Tom Kaczynski’s Cartoon Dialectics reveal equally traditionalist layouts. Regular six-panel beats are interrupted occasionally by bleeds or full-width panels, not slavishly aligned to the ground-pulse of the narrative (or discourse), but cutting across it polyrhythmically to elicit changing patterns of visual and semantic emphasis.

This Is Fine: David Lynch's THE ANGRIEST DOG IN THE WORLD
“The dog who is so angry he cannot move. He cannot eat. He cannot sleep. He can just barely growl. …Bound so tightly with tension and anger, he approaches the state of rigor mortis.” This was the introduction to film director David Lynch’s comic strip, The Angriest Dog In The World, which ran between 1983 and 1992. It first appeared in the LA Reader and then in several other alt-weeklies across the country.

Desperate Times Call For - : Ryan Carey Reviews DESPERATE PLEASURES By M.S. Harkness
At first glance, one might be tempted to glibly and reflexively classify Ms. Harkness’ new graphic memoir, Desperate Pleasures (Uncivilized, 2020), into the “sequel” category — after all, not only does it follow on directly from her earlier Tinderella, she specifically adopts the “character” of Tinderella “herself” as an authorial stand-in of sorts in a handful of asides in this latest work.
