Playing the crime card: do law and order campaigns win votes in Australia?
Crime and public safety are usually the domain of state politics. But the Coalition tried to elevate them as key issues for voters in the recent federal election. Claiming crime had been “allowed to fester” under Labor, the opposition promised a A$750 million Operation Safer Communities plan, which included police strike teams targeting drugs, a national child sex offender register, and more money for Neighbourhood Watch.
Vulnerability and place: a test of the psychology of perceived vulnerability for women and men
ABSTRACT Research shows that women’s heightened worry about crime reflects a stronger sense of psychological vulnerability, constituted not only by their perceptions of the likelihood of victimisation but also their sense of control over victimisation and the anticipated consequences of crime. While gender differences in worry have been widely studied, less is known about how neighbourhood context shapes these psychological processes.

Vulnerability in the Neighborhood: A Study of Perceived Control Over Victimization
Introduction A personal sense of control is a constituent part of one's subjective sense of vulnerability to victimization (Jackson 2011). If vulnerability is broadly defined as one's openness and/or exposure to harm (Hale 1996; Killias 1990; Warr 1984), perceived control refers to an individual's belief that they can resist crime physically, avoid crime situationally, and/or draw on social protective mechanisms to prevent or reduce the likelihood and consequences of crime victimization.
Review: 'Compass,' by Murray Lee
All "survival" means is the state or fact of continuing to live. Yet within that act exist endless possibilities and permutations for drama. From Daniel Defoe's "Robinson Crusoe" to Gary Paulsen's "Hatchet," survival stories hold an archetypal allure. It's captivating to read about luckless individuals questionably matched to their calamitous circumstances who must attempt to extricate themselves from the jaws of death and go on living.
Compass
"A darkly comedic tale, superbly told, Compass is a tour-de-force debut from an author whose name we should all remember. This is storytelling at its finest, featuring shape-shifting Arctic landscapes, a wryly laconic Inuit guide, an undersea sorceress, hockey stick harpoons, a chorus of seals and a disturbing finale.

Compass by Murray Lee
We can’t all be heroes. Some try and succeed. Others posture and pretend. And a few—just a few—set off on their hero’s quest only to discover that failure was within them all along. Compass recounts the adventures of a man who, after traveling the world shilling stories for a major geographic magazine about historic expeditions and explorers, sets out on an adventure of his own—an ill-advised and poorly planned trip to the Arctic floe edge under the disorienting twenty-four-hour summer sun.
Time for Congress to take action on hate crimes bill
A bipartisan group of elected officials in Congress introduced legislation on April 8 designed to help fight back against hate crimes across the country. It’s not hard to understand why. Hate crimes are up – in Washington state and around the country. Just last month, the King County Prosecutors Office filed its tenth hate crime case this year targeting local Asian Americans.
