The fragile hope for salmon recovery in Maine
(Science Times) AVON, Maine -- On a bright March morning, Paul Christman hiked through deep snowdrifts on the bank of Avon Valley Brook in the western Maine mountains, leading a crew wearing waders and shouldering unwieldy backpacks. One crew member carried a pack basket loaded with battered funnels crafted from stovepipes, duct tape and plumbing pipes. Another lugged a water pump. The last brought a cooler full of thousands of fertilized Atlantic salmon eggs.

The View from Kestrel Hill
In 30 years of exploring Waldo County, I’ve found few spots that hold a candle to a hilltop blueberry barren in Belfast. Hardly anyone refers to it by its real name, Patterson Hill, because it’s easily confused with the better-known Patterson Hill in East Belfast. Some call it Top of the World. My family has always called it Kestrel Hill, because a pair of small falcons usually nests there. The view is exceptionally expansive from the summit.

Maine is building homes faster, but they are emptier Original
Maine’s shortage of affordable housing has led to calls to aggressively build new homes and apartments: up to 84,000 more by 2030, according to a 2023 state report frequently cited by Maine media. But other numbers paint a more complicated picture, showing how it can be deceptive to focus solely on this statistic, as housing can become less affordable even if construction outpaces population growth. That’s exactly what has happened in Maine over the last 50 years.
Why is conserved land in Belfast being sold as commercial property?
The lot is now listed for sale for $295,000, as “an ideal location for retail, office, or mixed-use development.” (Murray Carpenter/The Maine Monitor) The 24-acre lot for sale in Belfast, between Renys and Goodwill, is touted as “an ideal location for retail, office, or mixed-use development.” But ads for the $295,000 property don’t mention that state and federal officials in 1997 approved its use as a mitigation site, to compensate for wetlands that the credit card giant MBNA filled while...

A Shady Land Deal in Belfast as a Conservation Easement Goes Missing
A wetland in Belfast was supposed to be conserved “in perpetuity.” Instead it’s being sold as commercial property. DEP is investigating.
