LIBERTY, Missouri — William Jewell College is mourning the death of a football player who died shortly after scoring a touchdown during the Missouri school's season opener on Saturday. MicahJo Barnett suffered an apparent medical emergency about 20 minutes after kickoff. Paramedics at the scene attempted life-saving medical care before Barnett was brought to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The junior running back was studying business administration, according to the school.

DAVIS, California — Jimmy Hernandez celebrated his 101st birthday by doing something few people would consider at any age: jumping out of an airplane. The World War II veteran marked his birthday with a skydive at Skydance Skydiving in Davis, California, joined by his grandson Santiago and son Mark Hernandez. It was Jimmy's second time jumping out of a plane. He made his first jump at age 100. “Once you're flying, you are in the hands of the Lord,” Jimmy said.

WASHINGTON — NASA launched the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Saturday, sending a new observatory into space that is designed to give scientists the biggest-picture view of the universe ever captured. The telescope, which will travel 1 million miles from Earth, has a 300-megapixel infrared camera with a field of view 100 times larger than the Hubble Space Telescope. Nancy Grace Roman was NASA’s first Chief of Astronomy and the first woman to hold an executive position at the agency.

MIAMI — Tropical Storm Karina strengthened into a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday and could become a major storm this week, forecasters said. The cyclone's center was at far out sea and was not threatening land. Karina had maximum sustained winds of 80 miles per hour, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said, making it a Category 1 hurricane. A major hurricane is Category 3 or greater.

TEMPLE HILLS, Md. — The mother of a 12-year-old boy said she doesn't think she'd be here if it weren't for her son's quick action during an attack Saturday at their Maryland home. Wearing last night’s clothes and a new bandage, Xavier Leathers recalled that terrifying wake-up call. Leathers told WUSA9 he was asleep on the couch at his mom's apartment when he heard her boyfriend come into the home shortly after midnight and begin choking her.

NEW YORK — Two air traffic controllers could be fired for leaving the tower at New York's LaGuardia Airport about an hour early on the night that an Air Canada jet smashed into a fire truck crossing the runway, killing both pilots, according to a government official familiar with the investigation.
