Introduction Postsurgical hypoparathyroidism is a major complication following thyroid surgery due to inadvertent damage to parathyroid glands or their blood supply. Loss of parathyroid function (termed hypoparathyroidism) leads to hypocalcemia—below normal levels of serum calcium, which is needed for a variety of functions such as muscle contraction and neuronal excitability (1).
