CRISPR, in combination with Cas9 nuclease, can serve as a robust technology for deciphering the functional consequences of gene editing. With its number of applications expanding, the CRISPR–Cas9 system is the most promising and broadly developed tool for targeted genome engineering [1,2]. When guided Cas9 cleaves a gene locus, imprecise end joining repair of the cell is activated, most often leading to disrupted gene function.
