1 Introduction Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder characterized by the malfunction of the CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein, which plays an essential role in maintaining the balance of salt and water in airway epithelial cells (Saint-Criq and Gray, 2017). Due to the loss or impairment of this function in CF, the passage of chloride and sodium ions across the cell membrane is impaired, producing thick, sticky mucus (Boucher, 2004).
