In December when dairy markets were collapsing and it was looking like we were in for a very weak first quarter, I wrote an article about the bright spots in the dairy world, primarily focusing on the demand for high-protein dairy products. Prices for whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolates have been hitting new record highs for the past year, and we’ve seen growing demand for cottage cheese and high-protein dairy beverages.

Section 32 purchases create opportunity

On Feb. 19, USDA announced they will be purchasing up to $263 million worth of agricultural commodities including $75 million in butter, $32.5 million in Cheddar cheese per processed cheese, $10 million in Swiss cheese, $20.5 million in fluid milk, and $10 million in ultra-high-temperature processed milk ($148 million total for dairy) that will be sent to food banks and nutrition assistance programs.

Everyone is well aware that milk production growth has been incredibly strong, pulling most dairy prices lower during the second half of 2025. That strong production growth was expected to keep some downward pressure on prices during the first half of 2026, or at least during the first quarter.
