Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Covering Android

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yup.

How is social media changing news?

Disinformation and misinformation is now easier to come by. We should really stop social media for "news"

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I don't read fiction

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means respecting the reader

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

I don't know, probably something related to that bag of milk we elected once

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email, always

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

macOS, Asana, WordPress (duh), Office 365

What's your favorite social network?

lolol none, they're all terrible

Who do you wish followed you?

Only the best brands in the spaces we cover at The Manual. We build relationships - we don't source products.

Why did you become a journalist?

I've always enjoyed writing. Now people pay me for it. Suckers.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I don't have one favorite of MINE, but I'm always proud when readers email just to say they loved the story.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be realistic, be honest, be positive, be vulnerable with your readers, and do fun stuff.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time, but AM is always smart

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Any pitch that I can see returns value to my readers is automatically one of the best.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

It was for "mixed reality" (HoloLens) - long story, but a fun one.

What's your favorite drink?

Water (hydrohomies, we out here!)

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On a mountain, working out at home, or driving to a cool restaurant

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

NYT

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That's it's "just" for men. I don't view most things as purely gendered.
