Bradshaw Christian High School football coach Drew Rickert gathered his players near the south end zone as the final seconds bled away Friday night. The scoreboard behind them reflected a result few outside the south Sacramento program believed possible. Rickert’s fifth-seeded Pride — young, counted out by many and coming off a season defined by turnover — had just marched into Yolo County and stunned fourth-seeded Woodland Christian, 36–30, in a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI quarterfinal.

For more than a decade, Franklin High football players have circled one game on the calendar — the night they get another crack at Elk Grove. On Friday, the Wildcats finally cashed in, ending a 13-year drought against their crosstown rival with a resounding 24-8 home victory at Cosumnes Oaks High that felt like more than just another league win. From the opening drive, Franklin dictated every detail of the game.

On a night honoring first responders, Sutter found a new hero of its own. With red and blue lights flashing behind the bleachers, officers from the Sacramento and Elk Grove police departments lined the sideline at Bradshaw Christian on Friday, saluted by the crowd. A helicopter rumbled overhead during halftime and landed on the field, drawing a roar from the stands. It felt like the kind of night meant for something memorable. And then Sutter’s Losi Asiata delivered.
