Effect of increased ocean resolution on model errors in El Niño-Southern Oscillation and its teleconnections
1 INTRODUCTION El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) teleconnections are the single largest source of variability and predictability on seasonal time-scales. Accurate modelling of ENSO and its teleconnections is therefore crucial for long-range forecasting. Despite continued improvement, differences between observed and modelled ENSO events and their teleconnections still occur due to model errors.

Independents Formerly of ‘The Independent Group’ Form Independent Group Known as ‘The Independents’
In February this year, The Independent Group was formed by MPs who are now independent from their previous parties but not independent of each other. It was soon rebranded to Change UK – The Independent Group, with the latter part of the name becoming increasingly less and less used. Poor performance by the new party in the European elections in May meant that 6 of their 11 MPs left to become independent of The Independent Group.
Democratic Institutions of the European Union
By Ned Williams on May 25, 2019 International Magazine Politics As a broad supranational union of countries, it’s essential that there are democratic elements in the operations of the EU and this is the case. However, exactly how the EU operates isn’t too well known to the general public, particularly in the UK. The European Parliament The European Parliament is elected in multiple ways – depending on the country.
International Elections: Slovakia Elects First Female President in Blow to Populism
The rise of populism in Central Europe is no secret. Autocratic, nationalist parties hold power in Hungary (Fidesz) and Poland (PiS), leading to the opposition – from socialists to the liberal pro-European centre-right – to align. Whilst the ruling ANO party in the Czech Republic claims to be centrist and to some extent that may be true, it also espouses populism and claims to be ‘anti-establishment’. However, a surge in the populist right isn’t always the full story.
This Week In British Politics: 2nd-8th July
In Parliament Jared O’Mara, the MP who defeated Nick Clegg in the 2017 General Election, had the Labour whip reinstated on Tuesday. He was suspended from the party in October last year for making misogynistic and homophobic comments prior to entering parliament, and he is the only MP (aside from abstentionist Sinn Fein members) elected in June 2017 who is yet to have made a speech in the Commons.
Your Guide to Southampton’s Council Elections 2018
The upcoming Council Elections will be exciting – and important – for Southampton. No party has a clear majority on the council, so the whole city is at stake. Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives will all be hoping that they can increase their representation. What’s up for election? Southampton City Council has 48 councillors, elected in 3-member wards. At each council election, 16 councillors – 1 from each ward – are elected to serve 4 year terms.
Southampton’s Geothermal Pursuit: A Success or Failure?
A major geothermal heating project lies in the centre of Southampton – has it been worth it? In the principled fight to reduce fossil fuel consumption and CO emissions in the UK, many different sources of energy have been trialled. Solar panels, wind turbines and nuclear power are the obvious options, but neither are without controversy – particularly the latter.

In Sunday’s German Election, Centre-Left Voters Will Benefit From ‘Splitting’ Their Votes
In many electoral systems, ideologically similar parties can benefit from merging together. In Germany’s two stage system, however, it helps for similar parties to be separate. The electoral system in Germany, known as Mixed-Member Proportional Representation involves two stages. First is the constituency stage, where 299 Bundestag (the German House of Commons equivalent) members are elected in single member constituencies, in the same manner as UK general elections.
Norway’s Parliamentary Election: A Narrow Victory For The Right
On Monday, Norway had an election to the Storting, the Nordic nation’s sole parliamentary body. The centre-right coalition government led by Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader, Erna Solberg (pictured below), narrowly prevailed. Like many countries, the politics of Norway is largely divided on left-right ideological lines, although it is not unknown for a party to change which ‘bloc’ they support.
Germany Has an Election This Month - What is the Likely Outcome?
On the 24th of September, Germans will head to the polls to elect a new parliament. Each voter has two votes, one to elect one of 299 members of the Bundestag in single member constituencies (like the UK’s electoral system), and another to elect a further 299 (or more) members to make the result as proportional to the number of votes each party attains as possible. On the second vote, only parties which earn more than 5% of the vote win seats.
Last Week’s Parliament Election No One Heard About
The House of Lords exists as a second parliamentary body to scrutinize bills which pass through the House of Commons. A second parliament chamber for this purpose is far from unique – such a body exists in every fully-fledged democracy with a population similar to or larger than the UK except South Korea.
