Trojan girls defeat rival Corunna for first time since 2013
OWOSSO — The Owosso girls basketball team heaved a gorilla off its back on Friday night, logging its first win over rival Corunna in 10 years by a score of 43-25. The Trojans were celebrating senior night, but with just a single senior — Lily Usher, who finished with four points — it was youth that led them past the Cavaliers. Freshman point guard Danica Dwyer was the game’s high scorer, finishing with 16 points, while setting her teammates up with six assists and logging three steals.
PIGSKIN PICKS: Murf weighs in for Week 5 picks
Hard to believe it’s Week 5 already for high school football. Still unbeaten are area entries Corunna, Durand, Morrice and New Lothrop. Sporting just one loss is Chesaning. In case you care, our Pigskin Picks panel frontrunners right now are Aaron Bodus and Matthew Bartow, each standing at 36-10. Both are rookie pickers. Bodus is coming off an 11-1 week while Bartow went 8-4. Josh Champlin also had a great week last week at 11-1. I was so-so at 9-3 and stand one game back with Josh.
Area runners to compete in regionals
DEWITT — State finals berths will be up for grabs Friday and Saturday throughout the state as the MHSAA regionals are on tap. The Owosso girls and the Corunna boys are each coming off capturing Shiawassee County cross country titles Oct. 23. Every area team, with the exception of Morrice, will compete Friday at the St. Francis Retreat Center in DeWitt, which is hosting Division 2 and 3 regionals concurrently.
FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: New Lothrop racks up points in 63-13 rout of Byron

Sophomore quarterback Jack Kulhanek tossed two TDs to Ian Crump and Mangino and finished 5 of 7 for 78 yards.
PIGSKIN PICKS: Late-starting grid season has odd feeling
Normally this would be where I would boast about being the reigning, defending, undisputed Pigskin Picks champion. But going into a big long spiel about that would seem a little … odd, given what we’ve all experienced in 2020. First the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the winter high school postseason, then the entire spring season. Pro sports were stopped, then restarted after several months of being idle. Few, if any fans, have been allowed back into games.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Hornets hold off Byron
NEW LOTHROP — Every time New Lothrop opened up a small lead, Byron came right back to challenge. During a seesaw game, in which the Hornets overcame the loss of Avery Moore to fouls, New Lothrop stayed alive for a possible Mid-Michigan Activities co-championship by beating Byron, 61-55, Friday. The Hornets led just 43-42 after three quarters, before delivering an 18-13 scoring edge in the final eight minutes. “That was a really big win for us tonight,” New Lothrop coach Brady Simons said.
GIRLS BASKETBALL PREVIEW: Corunna returns just one starter from district title team
CORUNNA — Corunna’s girls basketball team ran through the Genessee Area Conference Red Division in 2018-19, losing just two games en route to a district title and regional berth. With a new season comes changes. Corunna is no longer a member of the GAC, having now joined the Flint Metro League. The Cavs’ championship roster has undergone some changes as well. “We’ve got back one starter from (last year’s) team,” head coach Ron Birchmeier said.
CROSS COUNTRY: Hersch, Sowash run first at Greater Flint
MT.MORRIS — Several area schools had solid outings at the Greater Flint Championships Saturday afternoon. Jacobs said the Cavaliers — boys and girls — winning a regional title would be a perfect sendoff.
