Lookin' Good, Maplewood! - The NW Local
One positive to come out of 2020 is the new Maplewood Mall in Gtown, featuring an artist collective! The renovations to the beloved pedestrian mall, first announced back in 2013, finally got underway in November 2019. The familiar old trees and bricks were suddenly gone. Businesses remained open while the road got worked on until COVID-19 hit in March. Construction shut down for a while, but picked up again and the project was completed this fall.

The latest on the neighborhood’s two big renovations, the city’s new litter initiative, and wudder ice! Maplewood Mall’s renovation is underway, and businesses are still open on the mall despite the main roadway being ripped up and fenced off. All the trees are gone as well as most of the brick and asphalt pavers. Unfortunately, many of the tree roots were ripping up sidewalks and damaging water pipes below ground.

SEPTA Key finally expands across Regional Rail
It has been a long, slow, deliberate rollout – designed to not shock SEPTA riders with any sudden changes – but SEPTA Key is finally fully here, with the last two zones of Regional Rail stations accepting the Key as this Wednesday. May 1 marks the day that Regional Rail riders in Zones 1 and 2 will get to start using their Key to buy fare products, including single rides, weeklies and monthlies. SEPTA conductors will be toting card-readers to scan passenger's Keys as they ride the rails.
Under new law, Philly Sheriff gets guns away from alleged abusers fast
Pennsylvania recently passed a new law to get the hands out of accused batterers fast. Act 79, the first new gun control-related law to pass Harrisburg in years, took effect earlier this month. Philadelphia Sheriff Jewell Williams praised the law, under which guns and weapons now can get removed from an alleged domestic abuser's possession within 24 hours of a Protection From Abuse (PFA) order, and said it makes families safer.

William McSwain, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania appointed by President Donald Trump, claimed again on Tuesday that Philly's sanctuary city policies led to the rape of a child. Rapist Juan Ramon-Vasquez, 50, a Honduran national who was previously convicted and sentenced to eight to 20 years in state prison, was sentenced Tuesday to 21 months in federal prison for illegally re-entering the US after being deported, McSwain's office announced.
Mother, daughter charged with slaying five family members in Bucks County
Pennsylvania officials on Tuesday charged a 45-year-old woman and her 10-year-old daughter with murdering five family members whose bodies were discovered in an apartment outside Philadelphia, prosecutors announced. Three children were among the victims found dead on Monday at the apartment in Morrisville, a borough about 30 miles northeast of downtown Philadelphia, Bucks County District Attorney Matthew Weintraub told reporters.
