Social media is thrusting huge volumes of raw news at us without giving us a chance to digest much of it.

What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means being accurate, clear and easy to understand whether the work is in print, an image or a video.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
By e-mail. Phone calls are disruptive but OK if time is of the essence. Text message are OK only when time is short.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
Smartphone, laptop, pen and notepad, Outlook and Microsoft Word.
What's your favorite social network?
Who do you wish followed you?
Microsoft's Bill Gates and Bob Schieffer of the CBS Evening News. I'd be proud if either really wanted to hear what I had to say.
Why did you become a journalist?
I always liked to write and take photos and it always seems like an interesting profession.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I was a photographer on my high school paper: Brooklyn Tech's Survey.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
When the CompuServe online service closed in 2009 my blog post on The Paper PC was picked up by major news outlets around the world.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
You don't have to be the first to break the news. You should strive to be the first to explain it.
