What was your first job as a journalist?
While in college, I landed an internship at the State Archives of North Carolina and wrote a few blog posts on my findings and experiences!
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I've only ever used a typewriter once in high school. It made me thankful for laptops and modern keyboards.
How is social media changing news?
With phones at our fingertips, social media eases our ability to access new information. It also makes it easy to come across inaccuracies.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
As a massive fan of "The Devil Wears Prada," I would have to say both Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep) and Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway).
What does it mean to be a journalist?
I think the definition of a journalist has expanded in recent years. It's much more than writing and investigating. Being original is key!
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
There's a bit of a conspiracy theory surrounding blind musician Stevie Wonder's vision. I once saw as a result!
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
An email with a few paragraphs describing the topic is best. I will respond whether I decide to take it or not!
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
My laptop, pencil with a notepad, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Grammarly, Hemingway, and ClickUp.
What's your favorite social network?
YouTube for entertainment and discovering niche areas of expertise. Instagram for friends and family. Pinterest for everyday inspiration.
Who do you wish followed you?
A writer and journalist by the name of Hanna Phifer. She has a blog section on her website called "Thought Daughter," which I enjoy often!
Why did you become a journalist?
I've always had an organic interest in writing and research. My mother's work in STEM involves both, and her habits rubbed off on me!
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
I didn't work for my high school newspaper, but I was on the yearbook committee! I was in charge of writing brief captions for photos.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
I try to be proud of all my work! My Art & Object piece on Ethiopian art required travel and exploration, making it more rewarding to write.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Impostor syndrome is inevitable. Networking is crucial. Don't limit yourself to one style of writing or one specific umbrella of topics!
When's the best time to pitch you?
Usually in the late morning or early afternoon! However, I try to remain flexible outside these timeframes.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
When a Toledo Museum of Art representative reached out about their exhibit on Ethiopian artworks, requesting that I write a piece on it!
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
I'm not sure I've ever gotten a pitch bad enough that my rejection of it was memorable. I try to remain open-minded in all my interactions.
What's your favorite drink?
Matcha latte with oat milk. I make my own at home!
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading a book, journaling, listening to music or a podcast, browsing social media on my phone, or getting some fresh air on a nature walk.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I enjoy skimming through music-centered publications in my spare time. NME, Pitchfork, and Kerrang! come to mind.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
My extensive background in arts-focused content often gives people the impression that I can't work outside this box. I promise I can!
