Community reflects after St. Catherine Indian School consumed by fire

City firefighters battled a blaze for hours Thursday afternoon at the historic campus of the former St. Catherine Indian School near downtown Santa Fe. The fire was reported at about 3:45 p.m., and more than two dozen firefighters were still on scene several hours later, working to knock down the flames, according to a statement from city officials.

Tom Maguire, John Berkenfield and Gerard Martinez have been tailgating on opening night at the Santa Fe Opera for about 30 years. In the parking lot of the scenic venue north of the city Friday evening, about two hours before the curtain was set to rise for Madama Butterfly, they were enjoying their first course, a watermelon salad with feta and mint, joined by Thea Witt, Carrie Marsh and Emiliana Sandoval. "I'm a nut about the crystal china," Maguire said.

While coming and going in some shopping market parking lots in Santa Fe, you might have noticed a black, solar-powered camera trained on lanes of traffic. Even if you didn't, it noticed you. The cameras — automated license plate readers — are capable of detecting and storing images of every license plate that passes by, creating a potentially powerful record of the whereabouts of thousands of local people.
