The root of human suffering is clinging The third came from Alan Watts who reminded me of a Buddhist teaching — the cause of suffering is attachment or clinging. He explains you can’t cling to your breath without losing it. You have to let it go. Nirvana means blow out. Don’t hang on. Don’t clutch life. The justified resentment I mentioned at the beginning of this article is what I had to let go of. I had to let go of my antiquated ideals, my deep rooted expectations and grudges.
