Anthropogenic warming-driven atmospheric circulation shifts and angular momentum increase: influence on the Earth’s rotation

Abstract Changes in the large-scale atmospheric circulation that regulate Earth’s climate can slow its rotation by increasing the Length of Day (LOD). Using large-ensemble simulations from three global climate models under the SSP3-7.0 scenario, we find that global warming-driven changes in Atmospheric Angular Momentum (AAM) propagate into measurable variations in LOD. These arise from modifications in both the mass and motion components of AAM.

Abstract The equatorial Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) zonal gradient has worldwide impacts and is expected to be highly sensitive to future climate change. However, biases in climate models call the reliability of future SST gradient projections into question. Here, we combine multiple climate model Large Ensembles to show that equatorial precipitation and cloud feedbacks have a controlling influence on the future Pacific SST gradient.

Abstract Changes in temperature variability affect the frequency and intensity of extreme events, as well as the regional range of temperatures that ecosystems and society need to adapt to. While accurate projections of temperature variability are vital for understanding climate change and its impacts, they remain highly uncertain.
