The IX Reference Architecture Evolves for the Journey to Zero+
LNS Research has long been at the forefront of research on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Industry 4.0, and technologies’ impact on Industrial Transformation (IX). We were the first to define an IIoT Platform in 2015 and the first to show the path from business objectives to reference architectures through our Industrial Transformation framework.
How Technology Is Reshaping The Food & Beverage Industry Post-Pandemic
The pandemic’s disruption has been felt everywhere: from global supply chain disruption, to working from home, to mask mandates, COVID-19’s impact spread to every corner of the globe. One industry that was particularly hit hard was the food and beverage industry. Consumer buying patterns changed making demand planning incredibly difficult, while some products experienced unforeseen shortages or surpluses.
Schneider Electric Innovation Summit: Connecting Industrial Ecosystems
LNS Research attended our first Schneider Electric Innovation Summit since 2019 last month. The event was held at the Paris Expo Center, and about 3,000 attendees were hosted, 2,000 of whom were customers and partners. Supply Chain Visibility and Transparency a Key Element of Change in 2021
It is safe to say that 2020 was a year unlike any other. The COVID-19 pandemic brought on significant changes to everyday life across the world. It also brought some significant challenges to businesses from retail, to restaurants and manufacturing. The supply chain industry faced a challenge like no other when shutdowns began and manufacturers were left scrambling to come up with a backup plan.
How Traceability Helps Improve Food Safety, Curb Waste
Traceability and visibility along the entire supply chain has now become essential. By Niels Andersen, Chief Product Officer, ThinkIQ As the first COVID-19 vaccines began their rollout, news reports tracing their distribution chain – from raw material suppliers, through the production site to local hospitals, nursing homes, and inoculation centers – brought some of the complexity involved in moving a high-value product from its origin to end users, into sharp focus.
New Regulations and Discerning Consumers Increase Challenges to Food Manufacturers
The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has triggered chaos up and down the whole food chain. From farm to fork, the entire food industry has been upended, with casualties at every phase. And, the disruptions are still going on. However, the upheaval has also thrown a spotlight on issues that have been there all along, but without the urgency they have today. These include issues of quality, safety, environmental impact, consumer satisfaction and profitability.

2023 Rockwell Automation Fair: Delivering on Strategy
We all know the old saying, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." Well, it looks like Rockwell Automation is about to prove that saying wrong. Rockwell Automation Fair, just like the company itself, continues to evolve and push forward while building on the success of 2022. Automation Fair 2023 was slightly smaller than last year's event. Still, Rockwell reported 11,854 attendees, a major crowd for an industrial event in Boston, MA.
AWS re:Invent 2023: Doubling Down in the Cloud
With more than 50,000 attendees in Las Vegas from November 27 – December 1, 2023, and more than 300,000 watching online, AWS re: Invent is the biggest cloud computing conference in the world. AWS re:Invent is a learning conference hosted by AWS. The event is so big that it is more accurate to describe it as a collection of co-located events, including multiple keynote sessions, trainings, certifications, over 2,000 technical sessions, and an expo featuring AWS and partners.
Empowering Manufacturing with GenAI: A New Frontier of Possibilities
Imagine holding the key to unlock a technological revolution in the manufacturing world, akin to the impact of the PLC. Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the manufacturing landscape, with the potential to transform major value streams within the industry. This blog post serves as an introduction to a Research Spotlight on Generative AI, which delves into the capabilities and applications of this cutting-edge technology.
AI in EQMS: Three Things Executive Heads of Quality Need to Know
My colleague Niels Andersen recently wrote a Research Spotlight and blog post on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in manufacturing. However, there has been some development in the AI space since Niels' research was published, namely that OpenAI made significant announcements; most important is the ability to build your own GPT (they call them GPTs) without coding. Of course, Open AI has had some recent public drama as well.
OEE in a post-Covid world: What’s new?
The topic of OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) has been hotly debated. While our research shows that OEE is a commonly used metric, with many world-class manufacturing companies seeing substantial benefits, there are advocates for killing it as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI), claiming it is a distracting measurement.
