For the past several years, violence in Ontario schools has been discussed as though it were a series of isolated incidents: a child acting out, a classroom out of control, a teacher unable to cope. The dominant response has been managerial and individualizing—more reporting requirements, more surveillance, more discipline. But violence does not emerge in a vacuum. It is produced. It accumulates. And when it becomes routine, it is often a signal that a system itself is under strain.

As working teachers depending on retirement security in a climate-safe future, we’re confused and disappointed by the Ontario Teachers’ Federation’s (OTF) announcement to appoint Alberta oil and gas executive Deborah Stein to the board of directors of Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (OTPP). We’re calling on OTF, the representative of teachers in OTPP’s governance, to retract this appointment before it becomes effective on Jan. 1.

‘Seamless Days’ mean Safer Days for Back to School

Every school day morning around 8 am, my partner or I drop off our four-year-old at daycare. He loves his daycare...we love his daycare. He then attends school in the same building as he learns, plays, eats and rests throughout his day. As we rarely finish work before 5pm, like many households, having reliable school-based daycare is the difference between us working full time jobs and having a well looked after, happy kid or not being able to participate in the workforce at all.
