The European Commission apparently has no clue that one of its senior officials went to Afghanistan in January to meet with the Taliban, the latest indictment of an institution that continues to railroad accountability while proclaiming itself to be transparent. Let me give you a prime example. Johannes Luchner is the deputy-director general of the commission’s branch dealing with home affairs. On 26 January, he told MEPs in a public hearing that he had met with the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Controversy-hit Frontex may get powers to deport people from one non-EU state to another

The EU’s border force agency Frontex is set to have its power expanded so that it can deport people between non-EU countries, based on international agreements – raising the possibility of a future role for it in EU-backed return hubs. The idea was confirmed on Thursday (2 July) by the deputy-director general of the EU commission’s home affairs department, Olivier Onidi who is currently drafting a new proposal to reinforce the agency’s powers.

Von der Leyen’s party backs mapping ‘Islamist networks’ and scrapping key EU asylum protection

Broad swipes against asylum and Islam were issued in separate resolutions by the EU’s largest political force, the European People’s Party (EPP) on Tuesday (30 June). On Islam, the resolution claims the religion is being politically-exploited through entryism to undermine European democracy. The EPP wants authorities to map Islamist organisations networks, cut funding to civil society, and trigger more intelligence gathering on the religion.
