Niran Al-Agba is a board certified pediatrician practicing in her hometown for the last 16 years. She completed her M.D. at the University of Washington in 1999. After finishing her residency at the University of Colorado School of Medicine/Denver Children's Hospital in 2002, she returned to Kitsap County to join Silverdale Pediatrics and has continued in private pediatric practice ever since.

Every time patients ask my opinion about the changes to the childhood immunization schedule made by RFK Jr., I say the same thing: “I wish he would leave vaccinations alone and concentrate on changing our food.” Well, now that he has done it. He literally flipped the food pyramid on its head. While some may be shocked to hear this, my patients will not be surprised: I agree with the new food pyramid almost completely. Here's why I think the change is a good thing for the country.

I’m back writing about the CDC, but not directly one of its recent decisions. This time, it’s the medical community’s reaction to vaccine recommendations that needs some scrutiny. On December 5, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) voted to change the Hepatitis B vaccine recommendations for newborns. Hepatitis B vaccination will no longer be universally recommended to be given within 24 hours of birth.

In January 2016, a healthy 12-year-old patient died from a vaccine-preventable disease, Influenza A. Piper is the only patient of mine for whom I signed her birth certificate and her death certificate. I attended her delivery in an operating room at Harrison Medical Center in Silverdale nearly 21 years ago, yet I remember that moment like it was yesterday. The instant she was placed into my arms, I instantly fell in love.
