The Ultimate Men's Health Guy:10th Anniversary Edition Original
For a decade, we’ve searched the nation for men we admire—men who are physically strong, yes, but also mentally resilient, socially connected, and all-around Good Guys. This year’s finalists embody all that. Our all-star judging panel made sure. dayman gardner Galloway at home with three of his kids. What “Ultimate” Means to Me FOR AS LONG as I can remember, being a part of Men’s Health was a dream of mine.
Galloway: Roundabouts are better than traffic lights
Columnist Noah Galloway advocates for the implementation of more roundabouts to avoid accidents and high costs. Courtesy of Unsplash Traffic lights dominate most intersections in our road system, but roundabouts are slowly sneaking into the picture. We usually see them in moderately trafficked, wealthier areas of town. Most of us have seen many lights and roundabouts, but have never stopped to consider the purposes of both types of intersections.
Galloway: Advice: five tips for success in life
Columnist Noah Galloway lists five tips new students should follow to be successful at Iowa State and beyond. Courtesy of Priscilla Du Preez/Unsplash This advice column is meant for those who are working on skills that will not only help them in college life, but that will translate well as very useful tools once college is completed. Those clubs and organizations you once relied upon will be gone, and being comfortable as an independent human is paramount for success in life. 1.
Galloway: How to lessen joint pain
Columnist Noah Galloway discusses ways to reduce joint pain and inflammation through regular exercise and healthy eating. Courtesy of Braden Collum/Unsplash Approximately 54 million people suffer from arthritis every year, which is about 23 percent of the country’s population. It’s a big problem in this country and usually is paired with diabetes, heart disease or obesity.
Galloway: Hair health: Four things to keep in mind
Columnist Noah Galloway details four tips for creating better hair growth and avoiding damage or breakage. Courtesy of Unsplash There’s always a guy who is making a valiant effort in trying to hang on to his hair. In many instances, he would look much better shaving it all off. The first man I think of is LeBron James, who has been trying to hold on to his hair for nearly a decade.
Galloway: Best habits for reducing depression
Columnist Noah Galloway reviews some of his favorite tips for fighting low-grade depression or sadness, including healthy sleeping and eating habits. Courtesy of Unsplash Everyone at some point in their lives has dealt with the occasional bout of depression. Depression is obviously on a spectrum of length in time and the intensity at which the person experiences the illness. This illness is hereditary and can be passed on through the family tree.
Galloway: Start using the sauna
Columnist Noah Galloway explains the benefits of sauna training. Courtesy of HUUM/Unsplash The sauna has a myriad of health benefits when used safely and with caution. The sauna is a great way to rediscover the fountain of youth while staving off the inevitability of father time. One of the oldest practices of health and wellness, saunas have existed for approximately 2,000 years.
Galloway: Enhancing the entertainment of the NBA
Columnist Noah Galloway envisions new rules for the NBA that could help enhance its entertainment value. Courtesy of Unsplash I’m an avid NBA fan, yet I never watch the regular season, mainly because the superstars don’t care about the regular season. As long as the superstars make the playoffs, the regular season is kind of irrelevant. The stars are constantly sitting out and not playing just because they need rest.
Galloway: Unwritten rules of pickup basketball etiquette, part two
Columnist Noah Galloway wraps up his two-part series on the unspoken rules of pickup basketball. Courtesy of Unsplash Editor's note: This is the second piece in a two-part series about the unwritten rules of basketball. 6. Make the right basketball play Don’t try to be cool and make the tough pass with the off chance it might be a SportsCenter Top Ten. Always make the right basketball play. If someone is cutting to the hoop or open in the corner, hit him/her with the pass.
Galloway: The unwritten rules of basketball etiquette, part one
Columnist Noah Galloway lists some unspoken rules of basketball etiquette for both beginners and regular players. Courtesy of Scott D. Weaver/Big 12 Conference Editor's note: This column is part one of a two-part series. When is the ball “checked?” A check occurs at the start of the game in addition to following a foul call. Everyone stands around, and the guy who happens to be closest to the middle of the floor beyond the 3-point line will get the ball and throw it to the defender.
Galloway: Be wary of fad diets
Columnist Noah Galloway explains why eating a balance of healthy foods and counting calories is better than any fad diet. Courtesy of Unsplash There are so many different diets out there; it can really make your head spin. Doctors and nutritionists are always trying to convince you of their new diet that has "amazing" results. The nutrition industry has so much misinformation and poor research studies. I’ve heard a critique on just about every food.
Galloway: Four potential NFL rule changes
Columnist Noah Galloway proposes rule changes that would make the NFL better and safer for players. Courtesy of Unsplash It was the 2010 NFC Conference Championship game, and the Saints were playing the Vikings. The game went into overtime. The Saints won the coin toss. Columnist Noah Galloway debates the merits of referring to race car drivers as athletes.
Galloway: Limit pharmaceuticals, focus on nutrition
Columnist Noah Galloway believes doctors overprescribe because of their relationship with pharmaceutical representatives and argues that people should focus more on healthy eating instead. Courtesy of Unsplash I think we can all agree that consuming healthy foods is conducive to good health. Society tends to think attending the doctor’s office improves overall health, and there is truth to this.
Galloway: Don't finish your coffee just because you paid for it
The Sunk Cost Fallacy: people fall into this trap on a daily basis without even realizing it. The mindset of finishing your coffee because you paid for it even though it’s cold and not enjoyable. Your loss aversion system keeps you from avoiding the extra calories or saving the time that you would have used to finish a book or movie you don’t even enjoy. Hypothetically speaking, you receive free tickets from a friend to attend a sporting event the following weekend.
Galloway: Controversial humor is a good thing
Courtesy of YouTube Anthony Jeselnik once said that he strove to become the comedian that he would love watching as a college student. His dark and shameless humor makes him very unique, and there’s no one quite like him. His bits will consist of telling a story and then taking a hard left with a violent and unexpected ending. Robert Mays of The Ringer articulated this idea very well.
Galloway: Electoral College is imperfect but most effective system
The Electoral College was born at a Constitutional Convention during the year of 1787. Attendees of this Convention discussed ways in which a president would be elected to office. They devised a system that would give states with fewer people more sway in the presidential elections. Having the Electoral College keeps less populous states relevant in the political sphere.
Galloway: Granola bars aren't necessarily healthy
There is a misconception that granola bars are healthy. The word “granola” throws our minds for a loop because we associate this word with oats, grains and nuts that, in theory, would form an ultra-healthy snack. And while granola bars seem to relatively innocent, in reality, they are generally over-processed and aren’t much healthier than a candy bar. There are exceptions to this idea, however, as healthy granola bars most certainly exist.
Galloway: Yoga can be beneficial for mind, body
Students, faculty and community members gather to do yoga on the lawn in front of the Campanile on Aug 30 as a part of the Live Green! Initiative and its partnership with ISU Recreation Services. Jackie Norman/Iowa State Daily Yoga stretches, tones and strengthens your muscles at the same time. You will leave the workout feeling taller and leaner while others hobble out of the gym. You can also do it anywhere, all you need is a yoga mat and a little bit of space. Yoga connects the mind and spirit.
