In the spirit of America’s 250th anniversary, one Medal of Honor recipient reflected on the word “hope,” as he considered America for future generations. Retired Army Master Sgt. Leroy Petry, who served 15 years, put its meaning into an acronym. “That’s basically ‘Helping Other People Everywhere,’” Petry said. Recent recipient recognized for acts nearly 60 years ago The Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest award for military valor in action.

Actor Tom Hanks wanted to do more than inspire from the big screen, more for the legacy he will one day leave behind. He landed on building a company out of the very thing he doesn’t go a day without: coffee. He launched HANKS For Our Troops, coffee that makes a difference. Veterans find peace in Vietnam, 60 years later

Earlier this year in Vietnam, 78-year old Army veteran Larry Dobesh broke a stick and hung it in a tree. He explained that 60 years ago during the war, it was a warning sign he and other Americans would leave to alert their brothers in arms. The simple limb cautioned of trap pits filled with punji stakes placed by the Viet Cong.

2022 - Military Journalism

All of these award winners have a common bond. They all served in our nation’s armed forces. Only 2 percent of our media workers are veterans, even though more than 7 percent of Americans have served in our military. This list is an opportunity to recognize the outstanding work done by these journalists. It’s also a chance to hold them up as an example. They are an example for what newsrooms around the country could have on their teams. They’re an example of where veterans that want to move into the field of journalism could go. Quite frankly, they’re doing amazing work.
