VC&G Interview: Nolan Bushnell, Founder of Atari
Earlier this year, I had the chance to interview Nolan Bushnell, career entrepreneur and nigh-but-legendary founder of Atari. For the last seven years, Bushnell has been pouring most of his energy into his latest venture, uWink — a sort of Chuck E. Cheese restaurant for adults. Of course, being the history buff I am, I wanted Bushnell to clear up some things regarding articles I was working on at the time.
Ted Dabney (1937-2018)
In Memoriam: Samuel Frederick Dabney, Jr. (1937-2018), co-founder of Syzygy and Atari Samuel Frederick (“Ted”) Dabney, Jr., who co-founded Atari with Nolan Bushnell in 1972, died of esophageal cancer just three days ago. He was 81 years old. I was not close with Ted, but I did interview him at length for articles about Computer Space and Pong back in 2011 and 2012. During our conversations, he was candid, detailed, kind, and very helpful.
Modal VR: Atari Co-Founder Nolan Bushnell’s New VR Venture
A new elite VR experience is in the works from Atari’s Nolan Bushnell. The video game giant has just released word of his new venture, Modal VR which seeks to put the likes of Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and PSVR in the shadows. The tech will likely focus on the emerging VR arcade scene, with its wireless setup and 900,000 square feet capabilities. Full body tracking suits will be provided to allow players a wide range of motion across an even vaster play space.

“From Avocation to Vocation: How I Turned My Hobby into a Career” with Matt Hendricks of Thirsty Dice
Thank you so much for doing this with us! Can you tell us a bit about your “childhood backstory”? In undergrad I studied communications, then in grad school I focused on business and information science. Understanding the problem and the people is really important to me. Ten years ago, my wife and I went to Toronto for our anniversary. I’ve loved board games my whole life, and I practically dragged her into a board game café there.
How arcade games have come, gone, and could come again
The video coin amusement business in the late '70s to early '80s exceeded $18 billion annually before declining. It has been stagnant for over a decade, and today brings in only $6 billion a year. But that is rapidly changing. In fact, I believe location-based entertainment has the potential to be a thriving $20 billion market -- in a remarkably short time. The internet is driving this change.
