The enduring racist legacy of the games ‌‌Let's start at the very beginning, with the founder of the modern Olympics, Pierre de Coubertin. He designed the Olympic rings we see everywhere in 1913.

Two years ago, a young Dalit man told me about a frustrating encounter at his university canteen with a Brahmin man. As they waited their turn in the queue, the Brahmin man glanced at the menu and said, "Oh, there's no curd rice. Which South Indian doesn't eat curd rice at night!" The Dalit man was annoyed, knowing that historically, not all South Indians, especially those from marginalised castes, could afford curd or rice.
