How to photograph a solar eclipse? Syracuse.com photographer explains how he did it
Pulaski, N.Y. — Bright and early at 5 a.m. on April 8, I was checking the latest forecast and traffic reports in Syracuse to see where things stood for an event I had waited decades to experience – a total solar eclipse. I had scribbled notes, computations, and backup plans in a notebook and used four different apps to show the precise path of the eclipse and track the weather (Sun Seeker, Totality, Planit Live and MyRadar).

Upstate NY pro wrestler aims to be most hated guy in the ring (video)
When Nick Sullivan walked into WrestleCuse at the New York State Fairgrounds February 3, 2024, he had a chip on his shoulder. It showed in his scowl, his clenched jaw, his balled fists. Hundreds of eyes bored into him, taking quick measure, determining just how to label him. It didn’t take long before those probing eyes turned to hisses, boos and taunts. It usually starts with the kids. They know how to read these guys. Sullivan was no good guy. This guy is a heel.
Bald eagles putting on spectacular show over Onondaga Lake, and it’s only the second act (photos) Original
Syracuse, N.Y. — Aerial dynamics isn’t the first thing that crosses your mind when you think of Syracuse. Yet there are herds of people who gather in the deep winter every year to watch one of the best air shows in the Eastern United States: the annual gathering of bald eagles on Onondaga Lake. Over 30 bald eagles – some years nearly triple that – gather to nest and teach their young the ways of flying, fishing, and, well, knowing their place in the pecking order.

Blinded by a rare disease, CNY man used karate to rebuild his life
By the time Matthew Killian finished high school, he was nearly completely blind. A rare disease had taken away his eyesight and, as a result, much of his confidence. Now 23, Killian competed last month in his first-ever karate tournament. He took home two gold medals under the tutelage of Hanshi Rande Lawrence.

Watch these Lake Ontario surfers brave near-freezing waters for prime waves
Ellisburg, N.Y. — Sometimes it takes a total loser to surf in Upstate New York. In this case, the LOSERS (Lake Ontario Surfing Enthusiasts Revitalization Society) surfers targeted a spot north of Southwich Beach State park where a gentle breeze, six-foot waves, and 41°F water made for the perfect conditions to escape work and hit the Lake Ontario coast, which is good because they won’t bat an eye at also tackling a good surf session in waves sloshy with chunks of ice.

Covered bridges of the Catskills: You’ve never seen New York like this (video) Original
I remember the first time I was introduced to covered bridges, it was watching the cartoon “Ichabod Crane and Mr. Toad,” and the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow tossed his flaming pumpkin head through Sleepy Hollow’s bridge to try and end the irascible teacher. Growing up in North Carolina, I never saw any covered bridges myself, so they became iconic to me as symbols of the Northeast. New York, the home of Washington Irving’s titular tale, is the best place to start.

It’s the longest zipline ride in the U.S. based at Catamount Ski Resort that straddles the New York border with Massachusetts in the Berkshire/Taconic Mountains.

But with crossing state lines still difficult, they had to be flexible this year.
